Now it's Furyk alone in the lead at 3-under. Lynn's 2-under. Then there are a bunch of guys at 1-under and Mize with a bunch of guys (including Tiger Woods, through one hole) at even.
I remember last year the back right pin placement at 11 caused a lot of guys to miss off the right side. There must be something about that placement that makes it look like you can go at the flag, but causes a lot of players to fail out to the right.
One thing that is interesting about the online coverage of the Masters is that you can sit an watch every player come through and play three holes, like the Amen Corner coverage. It's interesting because you see so many of these pros look so human.
Charlie Rose was interviewing Jack Nicklaus last night. I think it's easy to read the text of what Nicklaus says and assume he's rattling Tiger Woods's cage, but I don't think so. I think he just answers the questions honestly. Mom talks all the time about one of the great joys about getting old is that you're more at ease with simply saying what you think, and I think that's what is going on with Nicklaus. Anyway, Charlie Rose asked Nicklaus about Woods's chances of catching Nicklaus on majors wins, and he said he still thinks he probably will. At the same time, he said, it's going to be really tough. Woods has to win more majors than anyone else on the PGA Tour has ever won, and he's got to win that many starting at age 38.

When Rick Pitino coached a national-championship basketball team, in 1996, the Masters winner was Nick Faldo, by five strokes over Greg Norman after trailing Norman by six going into the final round. Phil Mickelson finished third.
This seems like an excellent time to update everyone on the exciting proceedings over at the "HeathPostdotcom" Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Golf league. Well, congratulations are in order for Matthew and his Siler City Samurai team, which prevailed in the Winter Segment. However, in the all-important Spring Segment, my Ginger Reeves team led off things last weekend with a stirring and courageous victory.
In this weekend's competition, these two league juggernauts are doing battle again. Both the Samurai and the Reeves are starting Tiger Woods and Justin Rose today, so their performances today cancel each other out in HeathPostdotcom action.
For the Samurai, Dustin Johnson's surge to 6-under is huge news, but Henrik Stenson is dragging down the works with a 3-over finish. For the Gingers, Matt Kuchar is now at 4-under through 13 holes and Adam Scott is 3-under through 17.
It turns out that Rory McIlroy's girlfriend caddied for him only during yesterday's par-3 tournament, not today's actual first round. Nonetheless, McIlroy is even through 14 holes and tied for 33rd.
Buff Rory flips the ball from the fringe behind the No. 15 green to within about two feet of the hole, and then he taps in for birdie. "The man" is 1-under and now tied for 23rd.
Couples and Kuchar both slip back to 4-under. Everyone within four strokes of the Garcia/Leishman lead at 6-under except Kuchar is off the course. Kuchar is on No. 17.
So is Jason Dufner, who is 1-under.
McIlroy just bogeyed 17 to slip back to even par (as the CBSSports.com "Featured Group" video-stream commentators chuckled about McIlroy's girlfriend's caddying yesterday).
Mize remains 1-under through eight holes. He's in a six-way tie for third, behind Carl Pettersson and Brandt Snedeker, who are both 2-under.
ReplyDeleteLarry Fifty-Freaking-Four-Year-Old Mize won the Masters the year after Jack Forty-Freaking-Six-Year-Old Nicklaus won the Masters.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Larry Mize was 28 when he got his. And Jack Nicklaus got five others, in addition.
DeleteHere's Larry Mize getting his green jacket.
ReplyDeleteHere's an oil portrait of Larry Mize.
ReplyDeleteAnd here's an article about Larry Mize in "South Africa’s largest influential Christian magazine."
ReplyDeleteMize is even at the turn, and now it's Jim Furyk and David Lynn tied with Snedeker for tournament lead at 2-under.
ReplyDeleteNow it's Furyk alone in the lead at 3-under. Lynn's 2-under. Then there are a bunch of guys at 1-under and Mize with a bunch of guys (including Tiger Woods, through one hole) at even.
ReplyDeleteGo, Jim Furyk, my main man from West Chester, Pa.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how Beau Hossler's senior year in high school is going.
ReplyDeleteOlympics Update.
ReplyDeleteIan Woosnam. I am happy to see him every year.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the great, underrated names of all time in sports.
DeleteLarry Mize! Birdie on par-13 No. 12 pulls the home boy back into a big tie for third at 1-under.
ReplyDelete1. Jim Furyk (West Chester, Pa.), 4-under through eight holes
2. David Lynn (Billinge, Wigan, England), 3-under through 11
I remember last year the back right pin placement at 11 caused a lot of guys to miss off the right side. There must be something about that placement that makes it look like you can go at the flag, but causes a lot of players to fail out to the right.
ReplyDeleteFrom watching it on television the 11th hole seems so simple, but it is so incredibly tough.
ReplyDeleteDavid Lynn now up to -5 through 16.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I hope to do this Masters is learn, once and for all, what they're talking about when people talk about "Amen Corner."
ReplyDeleteJust go to Masters.com and watch the Amen Corner coverage.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm doing. I'll let you know what I discover.

ReplyDeleteI am surprised to learned that John Huh's name is pronounced "huh" and not "hue."
ReplyDeleteThat's great.
DeleteOh good our first look at Tiger on Amen Corner.
ReplyDeleteHe looked good! I'm happy for him and Lindsey Vonn.
DeleteLeishman now at -6 thru 17.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was excited to see Bubba Watson. I hope he's watching today and tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteAnyone else currently on the PGA Tour, I should've said that Nicklaus said.
DeleteTiger Woods birdies No. 13. He's at 3-under. I can now confirm that No. 13 is part of the so-called "Amen Corner," so there's our first clue!
ReplyDeleteThese two are done ...

Done.
Woods bogeys No. 14, so now he's back to the big tie at 2-under for sixth place.
ReplyDeleteHad to step away for a bit. Interesting to see Garcia at -3 through 8. Will be fun to see how he handles Amen Corner.
ReplyDeleteGarcia up to -5 thru 10. Coming to Amen Corner.
ReplyDeleteWhen Rick Pitino coached a national-championship basketball team, in 1996, the Masters winner was Nick Faldo, by five strokes over Greg Norman after trailing Norman by six going into the final round. Phil Mickelson finished third.
ReplyDeleteT1. Sergio Garcia (Borriol, Castellón, Spain), 6-under through 15 holes
ReplyDeleteT1. Marc Leishman (Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia), -6 through 18
3. Dustin Johnson (Columbia, S.C.), -5 through 14
T4. Fred Couples (Seattle, Wash.), -4 through 14
T4. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (Madrid, Spain), -4 through 18
T4. Rickie Fowler (Murrieta, Calif.), -4 through 18
T4. Trevor Immelman (Cape Town, South Africa), -4 through 18
T4. David Lynn (Billinge, Wigan, England), -4 through 18
And a birdie on No. 15 nudges Dustin Johnson into a three-way tie for the lead at 6-under.

"A golfer can receive a maximum of 20 fantasy points in each round of a tournament. The golfer with the lowest real-life score in a round receives 20 points. Other golfers receive two fewer points for every stroke that they finish behind the leader -- i.e., a golfer one stroke back for the round receives 18 points; a golfer two strokes back gets 16. Golfers 10 or more strokes back receive zero points."
It might've been advantageous to the Ginger Reeves Winter Segment performance had I read that paragraph for the first time sooner than 15 seconds ago.
Dustin Johnson slides back to 5-under and alone in third place.
ReplyDeleteIt turns out that Rory McIlroy's girlfriend caddied for him only during yesterday's par-3 tournament, not today's actual first round. Nonetheless, McIlroy is even through 14 holes and tied for 33rd.
