One way to determine which programs have been the strongest since 1975 -- the first year the NCAA was expanded to 32 teams -- is to look at each program's record in games from the Sweet 16 to the National Title. Then you can rank teams based on how many games they have won in those rounds. Ties go to whichever program has played more games in the Sweet 16 and later rounds. After this year's tournament, the top 10 list looks like this:
1. N. Carolina: 41-21 (National champs in 1982, 1993, 2005, and 2009)
2. Duke: 40-19 (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010)
3. Kentucky: 37-18 (1978, 1996, 1998, 2012)
4. Kansas: 25-18 (1988, 2008)
5. Louisville: 25-16 (1980, 1986, 2013)
6. UCLA: 23-15 (1975, 1995)
7. Michigan St: 21-13 (1979, 2000)
8. Indiana: 20-13 (1976, 1981, 1987)
9. Connecticut: 19-11 (1999, 2004, 2011)
10. Michigan: 19-8 (1989)
Interestingly, five of the last six NCAA titles have been won by the top five teams on this list.
