That's the title of one of the chapters in Dave Kindred's (off-the-hook) Basketball The Dream Game in Kentucky, and it seems appropriate for this post, as I've failed this March to pay typical attention to Kentucky's girls' basketball regionals. I'm going to try to catch up tonight with what's going on.
Here's what I know so far: The Lincoln County "Lady Pates" lead Mercer County, 10-5, in the first quarter of a 12th Region semifinal, and Stanford's (boss) WPBK 102.9 FM is on the scene.
Henceforth ... comments flow ...
The winner of the Lincoln-Mercer game gets Casey County Lady Rebels in tomorrow evening's 12th Region championship. Casey County beat Boyle County earlier today. This tournament is being played at Pulaski County High in Somerset.
ReplyDeleteFirst Region: Joey Fosko Tweets that Murray leads Graves County by five with about a minute to play in tonight's first semifinal. The second semi pits Marshall County and Paducah Tilghman. This tournament is at Murray State University.
ReplyDeleteAnd Murray has won by 12. Travis Turner with 1130 WOFC AM in Murray says that the Lady Tigers have made the last three First Region finals, winning in 2010.
DeleteJason Frakes @kyhighs
ReplyDeleteFour tickets will be punched to Girls' Sweet 16 tonight. #7 Notre Dame is first one in, beating #10 Highlands 63-44 in Ninth Region final.
7:25 p.m. - Mar 4, 2013
Eighth Region: John Herndon with The Anderson News Tweets that his home team is up by 25 at half against Oldham County. "So barring a total meltdown of epic proportions, Anderson and Simon Kenton will meet in the regional final for the fourth time in six years." Independence Simon Kenton survived Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins, 41-36, in tonight's first semi at North Oldham High in Goshen.
ReplyDeleteSecond Region: Hopkinsville University Heights and Webster County are scheduled to tip at 7:45 in tonight's second semi at Caldwell County High in Princeton. In the first, ...

Back to the 12th Region: Lincoln County leads Mercer County, 46-42, through three quarters, as Mercer sinks a buzzer three. WPBK complains that all three officials in this game seem to be watching the ball too often and missing a lot of collisions on other parts of the floor that deserve foul calls. If I was an official, I'd make this mistake all of the time.
ReplyDeleteAfter Mercer closes to within one, Lincoln responds with a couple of three-pointers to expand its lead back to 52-45. The Lady Pates have led by as much as 12.
DeleteLincoln County holds on, setting up a repeat of the 2012 12th final: Lady Pates vs. Casey County.
DeleteThird Region: In the championship at the Owensboro Sportscenter, Owensboro Catholic is leading Meade County, 43-39, with five minutes to go to a Sweet Sixteen berth. The Lady Aces are led by Becca Greenwell, a Duke-bound, 6-foot-1 point guard who in the first half had 10 rebounds and, at the half buzzer, two blocks, per @TheShowTMC.
ReplyDeleteTheShowTMC @TheShowTMC
DeleteGreenwell gets a steal on the inbounds and calls timeout. Catholic 53 Meade 49. 26 seconds left.
8:19 PM - Mar 4, 2013
Lincoln-Mercer was excellent on WPBT, but I made a mistake by not listening to this Third championship on WKWC.org. See ... that's what I get for not paying close enough attention so far.
DeleteMark Mathis @markmathisMI
DeleteOboro Cath taking starters out Greenwell makes last 2ft of Sportscenter career. Catholic wins 3rd region title 58-51 over Meade.
8:23 p.m. - Mar 4, 2013
15th Region: Pikeville Shelby Valley beats Inez Sheldon Clark, 40-37, in the championship at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.
ReplyDeleteKris Bentley @Kris_Bentley
Congrats to Rodney Rowe and Shelby Valley. First coach to win 15th Region title in both boys and girls basketball! #kinfolk

The Wikipedia editors seem a little [perturbed] by the Shelby Valley entry: "In 1990, school administrators[who?] realized that creating a strong tradition was one of the most vital undertakings they would encounter as they planned to open a newly consolidated school.[citation needed] Two schools with rich history and strong community support were about to merge and become one—Shelby Valley High School. The two schools, Dorton High School and Virgie High School, had both been in existence for several decades.[citation needed] Uniting the two very different student bodies would require great effort. Twenty million dollars was spent on this rural mountain community populated by generations of Appalachians, so they could have the same education advantages as students everywhere.[citation needed] The student body was to be made up of young men and women who held strong values and the desire to rise above the poverty that plagued so many in the region.[citation needed]
Delete"During its existence, the school has gone far in reaching this mission. Nearly 3,000 students have graduated and gone out into the world seeking to fulfill a wide variety of dreams.[citation needed] Doctors, lawyers, bankers, teachers, as well as a host of other hard working and productive citizens, have joined the American work force. The school can even boast an Air Force Academy graduate, as well as a Harvard University graduate.[citation needed] Shelby Valley’s success has been founded upon expectations.[citation needed]"
13th Region: Corbin edges Bell County, 63-60, in the championship at Harlan County High, and the Corbin paper, The Times-Tribune, Tweets that it's the first trip to state for the Lady Redhounds since 1982.
ReplyDeleteNinth Region: As Jason Frakes previously Tweeted, it was Park Hills Notre Dame Academy over Fort Thomas Highlands, 63-44, for the championship at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.
ReplyDeleteSo, four regions have been decided through tonight--Third (OweCath), Ninth (NDA), 13th (Corbin) and 15th (Shelby Valley)--and not one of them is sending its 2012 rep--Third (Muhlenberg County), Ninth (Boone County), 13th (Clay County) and 15th (Magoffin County)--back to Bowling Green for the Girls' Sweet Sixteen.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet we could yet see as many as eight repeat appearances from last season's tournament:
ReplyDelete-- Marshall County, who will play Murray in the First Region tomorrow;
-- Marion County, the 2012 state runnerup, who will play LaRue County in the Fifth;
-- Louisville Butler, who will play Louisville Mercy in the Sixth;
-- Louisville DuPont Manual, the defending state champ, who will play Louisville Assumption in the Seventh;
-- Montgomery County, who will play Campbell County in the 10th;
-- Lincoln County, who will play Casey County in the 12th;
-- Perry County Central, who will play Letcher County Central in the 14th, and
-- Ashland Blazer, who will play Boyd County in the 16th.
In closing tonight, we bid farewell to the folks of Russell County High, whose boys' basketball team lost in the Fourth Region championship to Warren Central on Sunday and whose girls' basketball team lost in the Fourth Region semifinals to Bowling Green on tonight. Both games were at WKU. That's 180 miles of round-trip driving from Russell Springs to Diddle Arena and back home again two days in a row, only to roll back into town late tonight to a slew of derisive Tweets from the city kids in BG like the following ...
ReplyDeleteLike foreal why are these people from Russell county still talking ish and complaining about the game. It's over, we won! #pointblank
9:53 p.m. - Mar 4, 2013
I still don't know where Russell county is
10:08 p.m. - Mar 4, 2013
If 2 Russell county alums get married then divorce, our they still counted as cousins?
10:10 PM - Mar 4, 2013
The Laker boys finished 26-6 and advanced to the regional championship for the first time in several decades; the Lady Lakers went 24-5 and claimed their fourth consecutive 16th District crown. That's a heck of a season in Laker Country. Hooray for Russell Springs!
Hooray for Russell County schools' getting a snow day today! I hope everybody in Russell Springs sleds over to school to see the 16th District championship trophies.
DeleteWell, I got pretty lucky on my rooting interests last night.
ReplyDeleteIn the First Region, Marshall County beat Murray, 41-39, in a game that the Murray Ledger & Times called on Twitter, "another classic battle between Murray and Marshall for title." Murray failed to score in the game's first seven minutes, and Marshall County led by 25-19 at half. A 12-1 run inched Murray ahead by 37-34 with three minutes to play, which remained the score until 38 seconds to go. But Murray committed two turnovers and Marshall County scored two buckets, and the Lady Marshals had rallied to win their 574th or so First Region girls' title.
