In the second quarter, tournament-favorite Marion County leads Anderson County, 17-10, in today's first semifinal in the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen basketball tournament. These are the top two teams in the state, per The Courier-Journal Litkenhous Ratings.
Today's second semi at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena will pit Louisville Manual, the defending state champion, against Park Hills Notre Dame. That game is scheduled to tip at 11:30 a.m. Central, and the championship will take place at 8 p.m.
So earlier today, Marion County blitzed Anderson County, 72-49, in a matchup of the top two teams in The C-J's Litkenhous ratings. The second semifinal ruined the opportunity for a rematch of last season's state-championship game, as Notre Dame beat the defending state champ, Manual, 64-60.
ReplyDeleteMarion County, undefeated and having beaten every Kentucky opponent by double-digit margins this season, has won its Sweet Sixteen games by 21, 39 and 23 points. And after three fairly competitive quarters, the championship, too, is turning into a blowout. The Lady Knights lead the NDA Pandas by 50-32.

ReplyDeleteThese girls from Marion Co. are legit. They swarm the ball on defense & just smothering consistent pressure. And great offensive rebounding

Marion County is on its way to become Kentucky's first undefeated girls' basketball team in almost 30 years. As the KHSAA's play-by-play announcer for this game, Neal Bradley, enjoys pointing out, the last undefeated team was the 1984 Marshall County Lady Marshals. (Bradley is a Marshall County High grad.)
ReplyDeleteNotre Dame is coached by Nicole Levandusky, who starred in one of the most famous upsets in the history of the NCAA women's tournament.

"I love them to death," Coach Trent Milby says of his team.
ReplyDeleteI FINALLY just heard the Bowling Green jingle, and it's terrific.

ReplyDeleteMarion Co 39-0 in a state with no classes. I think it's time some national rankings sites to rethink #1. #justsayin

ReplyDeleteCome out & Welcome home the State tourney champs #LadyKnights at 2 pm on Sunday at the Roby Dome!
9:57 PM - 16 Mar 13
Here's Makalya Epps's tournament ...
ReplyDelete-- vs. Bowling Green: 26 points (11/19 field, 3/8 3s), 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 5 steals, 28 minutes
-- vs. Montgomery County: 22 points (8/19 field, 2/6 3s, 4/4 free throws) 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 0 turnovers, 0 steals, 30 minutes
-- vs. Anderson County: 28 points (10-15 field, 1-3 3s, 7-12 free throws), 2 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 turnovers, 3 steals, 31 minutes
-- vs. Notre Dame: 15 points (6-14 field, 0-2 3s, 3-5 free throws), 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 steal, 31 minutes
That championship performance looks like a bit of a downer, but she did score the Lady Knights' first nine points. Notre Dame didn't let Marion County run away, but the result never did feel in doubt after the first quarter.
ReplyDeleteEpps is a McDonald's All-American and a finalist for Miss Basketball. Her team is the first Fifth Region team--boys or girls--to win four straight regional titles. The Lady Knights were runnersup in 2012, and now they are the first undefeated state champ in 29 years.
ReplyDeleteAnd she was just announced as Sweet Sixteen MVP (of course).
ReplyDeleteAnd next she'll play at UK, where her dad was the starting point guard on a national-championship team.
ReplyDeleteEPPS!!!
DeleteThe Feldhauses deservedly got a lot of love last weekend when Madison Central won the boys' Sweet Sixteen. This weekend belongs to the Eppses.
