I did not want Belmont to join the OVC, and they vindicated my fears by beating Murray State in the finals of the OVC Tournament. For the second straight year, the OVC season ended with an amazing game. Unfortunately, everything went wrong for Murray down the stretch. They missed some key free throws in regulation to let Belmont send it into overtime. And with 23 seconds left in OT, and the game tied at 68, Isaiah Canaan -- possibly the best player Murray State has ever had -- dribbled the ball off his foot for a turnover. You can't make that many mistakes against Belmont, and the Bruins scored on the last possession to beat Murray 70-68.
The Racers finish with a record of 10-6 in the OVC, and 21-10 overall. They won the OVC's Western Division, and they would be going to the Big Dance if the OVC hadn't added Belmont. They become the third of Kentucky's six eligible D-1 programs to be eliminated from the national title race.
Meanwhile, in the Sun Belt Quarter-Finals, Western Kentucky beat South Alabama 62-59. It was Western's fifth win in their last six games. Today the Hilltoppers (18-15) take on Arkansas State (19-11) in the Semi-Finals.
