Here is what makes this album interesting. The production is very good. Musically the songs are interesting, unique, and hook heavy. Where the album falls flat is that Childish Gambino is lyrically unable to match that production success. I would be interested to see what he does with his second album. If he can grow lyrically then he may produce a very good album. We get hints of what he can do like on the track "Hold You Down." I don't believe that all hip-hop has to be serious, but it just so happens on this album the more serious songs are the ones that seemed to keep his lyrical focus.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
