I'll have more to say about this game later, but I just wanted an excuse to link to our old friend Pat Forde, who seems to like SEC football as much as he likes UK basketball.
Oh, and while I'm at it, here's a link to our old friend Gene Wojciechowski, the UT grad who was surprised folks in Kentucky didn't want to buy his book about the 1992 Duke/Kentucky game.
For me, the funniest part of the broadcast was at halftime when Nick Saban was going off the field with a 28-0 lead, and he had to talk to the sideline reporter as if Notre Dame still had a chance.
All the experts seemed to think that Notre Dame would be able to line up head to head with Alabama. I think for many of us we expected a real physical tough game with a lot of running. Obviously one expert knew that Notre Dame could not line up and play head to head smash mouth football, that expert would be Brian Kelly who completely abandoned what got them an undefeated season and tried to throw the ball around.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the first half, Brent Musburger said, "If this was a title fight, they'd call it." You hardly ever hear the TV guys willing to admit stuff like that with so much broadcast still left to go.
ReplyDeleteMusburger also had a lot to say about the Alabama quarterback's girlfriend and mom. At one point, he was talking about how beautiful a woman one of them was, but I was unsure which one he was talking about. They are both attractive women, but Musburger was going nuts about one or the other.
For the first hour of the game, ESPN Classic was showing a collection of Battle of the Network Stars clips, and I was a little disappointed with myself that I bypassed those to watch the game.
This just in from the "Oh, snap!" desk ... Vanderbilt's coach at a high-school banquet in Macon, Ga. referred to Alabama's coach as "Nicky Satan."
