Kentucky high-school football, championships

Oh, snap. Fire up the printer, and strap on your headphones--it's state-championship time, baby! Here's this weekend's lineup of finals at Western Kentucky University's L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green.

Class A, Westwood Fairview vs. Mayfield, 11 a.m. Central Friday--Mark Maynard, great, in Ashland's Daily Independent: "Fairview and Mayfield — the counterparts in today’s Class A state championship at noon — are 384 miles apart, according to Google maps. By those calculations, those schools are five miles further than the state is long!" ... The Mayfield Cardinals lost, 24-6, to Hazard in the 2011 Class A championship. They were Class 2A state champs in 1977-78, 1985-86 and 1993 and Class A champs in 1995, 2002 and 2010. ... Fairview has never won a state championship, but where do these Eagles rank among all Eagles? ... "BITW," BTW, is for "Believe in the 'Wood." ... The Eagles' defense has been impressive this eason--especially the starters. ... Cardinals quaterback Jake Guhy is getting the same second chance his brother made the most of in 2010. ... Fairview is one of the state's three undefeated teams, all 14-0. Can you guess the other two? ... Merry Christmas from Mayfield. No, really. ... WYMC is scheduled to have the Mayfield-centric call of this game later this morning, but just a few minutes ago it played a totally super, live version of Roy Orbison doing "Pretty Paper" by Willie Nelson (but not this live version).

Class 3A, Belfry vs. Louisville Central, 3 p.m. Central Friday--The Central Yellowjackets were 2007-08 and 2010-11 Class 3A champs. ... The Pirates won 2A championships in 2003 and '04. ... Belfry lost to Central in last season's final, and, per a Pirate, there has been a sign in the runnerup's locker room all season: "Central 15, Belfry 14." ... "Pond Creek Nation" primer. ... Says a 'Jacket to Jason Frakes of The Courier-Journal, "We're lights out to the ball every play." ... "No matter how the game turns out, Belfry is a respected program in the state of Kentucky," writes Kyle Lovern in the Williamson Daily News. ... Pirates of Goody, to "Pirates of the Caribbean (Krump Remix)."

Class 4A, Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins vs. Fort Thomas Highlands, 7 p.m. Central Friday--The media up in northern Kentucky seem to feel pretty confident in the ol' Bluebirds, wondering whether the Collins nickname is "Lady Governors" and about the whereabouts Friday evening of Cris Collinsworth. ... Highlands coach Dale Mueller, however, is providing the Titans with no bulletin-board material. ... In addition to being the defending Class 4A champs, the Bluebirds were 2007-10 5A champs; 1975, 1977, 1981-82, 1989, 1996, 1998-2000 and 2004 3A champs, and 1960-61, 1964, 1968 and 1970 2A champs. ... Collins made the 4A semis last season, too. ... Bob White, in The Courier-Journal, says a middle school on the west side of Shelby County is a primary reason for the rapid rise of Collins. ... Richard Skinner in The Kentucky Enquirer dopes the matchup. ... Bluebirds quaterback Donovan McCoy has 30 passing and 20 rushing touchdowns this season. ... Rest in peace, Coach Mueller's mother-in-law.

Class 2A, Caldwell County vs. Newport Central Catholic, 11 a.m. Central Saturday--The Caldwell County Tigers were state 2A champs in 1963 and 1998. ... The NewCath Thoroughbreds won the 2A state title in 2010 and 1984 and Class A in 2005 and '06. ... "Don't overcoach," Mayfield's coach advises his western-Kentucky colleague. ... Don't overpursue, NewCath's coach warns his Thoroughbreds. ... The Kentucky Enquirer's breakdown.

Class 5A, Union Randall K. Cooper vs. Bowling Green, 3 p.m. Central Saturday--The Cooper Jaguars haven't made it to Bowling Green yet; the school is having a pep rally for the team in Union tonight. ... The Bowling Green Purples are the defending 5A champs, and they won 3A in 1995. ... Cooper, which opened in 2008, has never won a state football championship. ... Only one coach in the history of Kentucky high-school football has taken three different schools to state-championship games. It was Dan Haley, who led Lexington Bryan Station to a 1969 2A loss to Elizabethtown; Paducah Tilghman to the 1973 2A win over Boyd County and 1980 4A loss to Trinity, and Bowling Green to the 1994 3A loss to Covington Catholic and 1995 3A win over Highlands. My brother failed to make the cut as a reserve center with the '73 Blue Tornado--but not before the team picture was snapped. ... The most ardent NewCath fans will be paying attention to this game, too. ... It hasn't been a week of all fun and games in and around BGHS. ... The Jags have shown the ability to win in different ways. ... The Purples' Nacarius Fant has 18 receiving and four punt-return touchdowns on the season. ... Bowling Green returned only four starters from its 2011 championship team. ... Nonetheless, like Fairview, BG remains one of the state's three undefeated teams, all 14-0. Can you guess the third?

Class 6A, Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Louisville Trinity, 7 p.m. Central Saturday--History is on the side of the 'Rocks. ... Trinity's state championships: 6A in 2007-08 and 2010-11; 4A in 1976-77, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1988-90, 1994, 2001-03 and 2005-06, and 3A in 1968 and 1972-73. ... Nary a one for the Panthers. ... Trinity's James Quick is considered to be the state's top player. ... But Mike Fields reports in the Lexington Herald-Leader that Quick is unlikely to play against PRP. ... And Go Heath wonders if all the Shamrocks are tired. ... PRP, meanwhile, is undefeated--and, like Fairview and Bowling Green, 14-0. ... "A bumpy road to success" for the Panthers, writes JFrakes in The C-J.

  5. WYMC had (I think) Mayfield's offensive coordinator on for an interview. He said that he was impressed in last season's championship with Cardinals quarterback Jake Guhy when, after Guhy's fourth interception and Hazard up by more than a couple of touchdowns, Guhy was the first Cardinal back on the field on the next Mayfield possession.

  11. Mayfield, 7-0 ... After Fairview picked up a few first downs on their possession, Mayfield took over at its own 32 after a punt. Guhy connected with Jonathan Jackson around midfield, and the senior running back raced the rest of the way for the score.

  12. On a second down, Mayfield quarterback Guhy is sacked, and WYMC's play-by-play guy, Vince Dawson (sp?), notes that the Fairview player "comes up dancing. You're down, 7-0, son."

  13. But Fairview responds with a two-play, 80-yard touchdown run, adds the two-point conversion (WYMC's Jackson says Fairview never kicks) and now recovers an onside kick. It's 14-8, Mayfield, and Fairview has a first down at the Cardinals' 36 still in the first quarter ... Eagles driving ...

  15. Jackson runs for his third touchdown of the game--this time, from 31 yards out--and then is tackled in end zone, resulting in a Fairview 15-yard penalty on the coming kickoff. Mayfield now leads, 21-8, and WYMC has pretty much turned the radio show into a plea to college coaches to give senior Jackson a scholarship offer. I personally hope Willie Taggart is listening.

  26. From pages 435 and 436 of Kentucky: A Guide to the Bluegrass State, which was originally published by Harcourt, Brace and Company in October 1939:

BELFRY, 3.6 m. (668 alt., 410 pop.), one of the coal-mining communities that are strung out along Pond Creek for approximately 15 miles, is typical of the numerous half-abandoned mining towns of the area. They are unincorporated and, with their unpaved streets and unpainted buildings, come into view like blighted spots on the land. They have all the inconveniences and few, if any, of the comforts of modern towns of equal size, and none of the advantages of agricultural countryside. Small drab houses, most of them in need of repair, huddle close together along the deep valleys or stand undertainly on the mountain sides. Most of them are of boom-time flimsiness, with one thickness of board in the walls that rest on slender, often-tottering, posts, many are papered with newspapers and patched with cardboard to shut out draughts. ... Life in the coal-mining towns is meager and hard. The customary diet of the miner and his family consists chiefly of beans--and more beans--corn bread made without milk, and 'bulldog gravy,' a mixture of flour, water, and a little grease. In the summer those fortunate enough to find a small patch may grow a few vegetables, but for the most part they grow pumpkins. There is little or no milk available even for the children. As a result diseases of malnutrition are common. Leisure is abundant and money scarce. Brawls and an occasional shooting, a bit of penny- and nickel-gambling, all of them usually enlivened with moonshine, are the recreation of the men.
