Per today's Class A championship in Kentucky high-school football, topix.com user "eagle nation" this week forecasted from Ashland, "cards had a nice season..but these eastern ky hard core boys will show yall what physical fb is all about....game will be close but eagles will win...very tough front line...with the best three backs in the state..combined that is...very fast. eastern ky will win again...seems like from now on against the western cream puff teams...mayfields district is the weakest in state...district 7 fairview, raceland..nicholas co. paintsville..will put them against any 1A team around."

A few members and coaches from the Shelby County High School state championship team were on hand to see the team off ...
As the Titans left the gym, the sounds of the band and cheering students, fans and parents welcomed them. The eighth to twelfth grade students had lined the driveway from the buses parked by the entrance to the football field all way to the front of the school. ...

DeleteWYMC had (I think) Mayfield's offensive coordinator on for an interview. He said that he was impressed in last season's championship with Cardinals quarterback Jake Guhy when, after Guhy's fourth interception and Hazard up by more than a couple of touchdowns, Guhy was the first Cardinal back on the field on the next Mayfield possession.

Mayfield, 7-0 ... After Fairview picked up a few first downs on their possession, Mayfield took over at its own 32 after a punt. Guhy connected with Jonathan Jackson around midfield, and the senior running back raced the rest of the way for the score.
ReplyDeleteOn a second down, Mayfield quarterback Guhy is sacked, and WYMC's play-by-play guy, Vince Dawson (sp?), notes that the Fairview player "comes up dancing. You're down, 7-0, son."
ReplyDeleteOn the ensuing third-and-28, Jackson bursts for the first down, and, then, a few players later, Jackson carries tacklers into the end zone: 14-0, Cardinals.
But Fairview responds with a two-play, 80-yard touchdown run, adds the two-point conversion (WYMC's Jackson says Fairview never kicks) and now recovers an onside kick. It's 14-8, Mayfield, and Fairview has a first down at the Cardinals' 36 still in the first quarter ... Eagles driving ...

ReplyDeleteJackson runs for his third touchdown of the game--this time, from 31 yards out--and then is tackled in end zone, resulting in a Fairview 15-yard penalty on the coming kickoff. Mayfield now leads, 21-8, and WYMC has pretty much turned the radio show into a plea to college coaches to give senior Jackson a scholarship offer. I personally hope Willie Taggart is listening.

KHSAA radio switches to the official's microphone during the instructions before the overtime coin toss. Notable: "You can't scoop and go" (meaning turnovers cannot be returned for scores by the defenses), and timeouts do not carry from regulation ("everybody gets one").

Collins spunkily drives to the Highlands 13 but drive stalls as four downs from there go for three yards, incomplete pass, 13-yard sack and incomplete pass. The Titans turn the ball over to the Bluebirds on downs at their 23 with 3:43 to play in the half.
