World Series Game 2

Tonight's matchup features 22-year-old Madison Bumgarner (16-11, 3.37 ERA) for the Giants and 28-year-old Doug Fister (10-10, 3.45 ERA) for the Tigers.  Detroit needs a win to avoid going home down 2-0.

  1. In the top of the 2d, the enormous Prince Fielder is hit by a pitch, and then he tries to give the Tigers the lead when Delmon Young rips a double down the left field line. But this is nuts, as it takes about 15 minutes for the enormous Fielder to go from first to home. He is out by a mile, and the Tigers rally quickly fizzles. Going into the bottom of the 2d, it's still 0-0.

  2. Still no score through five innings. Tiger fans will be nervous that Fister has already thrown 86 pitches, while Bumgarner has only thrown 56.

  3. OK, now the wheels are starting to turn. Still 0-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. Hunter Pence whacks a single to lead off the inning for the Giants. The Tigers then replace Fister (who was great tonight) with Drew Smyly. But then Smyly walks Brandon Belt, and the Giants have men on 1st and 2d with no outs.

Fangraphs now gives San Francisco a 72 percent chance of victory.

  4. With runners on 1st and 2d, Gregor Blanco comes up to bunt for the Giants. With a count of 3-1, Blanco lays down a perfect bunt. The Tigers try to let it roll foul -- BUT IT STAYS FAIR, dying right next to the chalk line.

Now the Giants have the bases loaded with no one out.

Brandon Crawford, the Giants' number 8 hitter, is up next.

  5. Crawford hits into a double play, but Pence trots home from third and the Giants lead 1-0.

  6. The Giants pull Bumgarner (who gave up 2 hits and 0 runs in 7 innings) to send up Ryan Theriot as a pinch-hitter.

  7. Smyly strikes out Theriot and the inning is over. San Francisco only gets one run, but that run could be important. They lead 1-0, and need only six more outs for victory.

FanGraphs now gives the Giants a 77.7 percent chance of winning.

  8. Santiago Casilla takes the mound for San Francisco, while the incomparable Jon Miller returns to the microphone at KNBR radio. (Miller does the 1st, 2d, 8th, and 9th innings. I use ESPN Radio for the other innings).

Casilla sets down the Tigers 1-2-3, and Detroit still has only two hits in this game. Now FanGraphs gives San Francisco an 88.4 percent chance of winning.

  9. By the way, in the middle of the 8th inning, the crowd in San Francisco stands up and sings along to "Lights," the old Journey song. And I say good for them.

  10. In the bottom of the 8th, the Tigers walk the bases loaded with one out, and Hunter Pence whacks a sacrifice fly to bring home Angel Pagan with the second run of the game. Giants now lead 2-0 as they get a run without a hit.

  11. The Giants are retired and they head to the 9th with a 2-run lead. FanGraphs gives them a 94 percent chance of victory, but we Nats fans know that six percent can really hurt.

  12. In the bottom of the 9th, Sergio Romo sets down the Tigers 1-2-3, and that's it. The Giants lead the series 2-0, and the Tigers now face a must-win Game 3.
