Here are the final standings (by league) for the 2012 regular season. Congratulations to the Nats and the Yankees, who are the best teams in each league. In a fair world, they would be meeting in the World Series next week.
A few notes:
1. The Nats won the most games for any baseball team in Washington since 1933. This was Washington's first season with a winning record since 1969. Washington's only prior post-season appearances were in the World Series of 1924, 1925, and 1933.
2. The Reds had their most wins in any regular season since 1976.
3. The Cubs lost 100 games for the first time since 1966.
4. In the 50-year history of Houston's MLB franchise, 2011 and 2012 are the only years in which Houston lost over 100 games. The 2012 Astros lost more games than any other Houston franchise. (For the record, the Nats lost over 100 games in 2008 and 2009 -- and look where they are now.)
5. This was the first season since 2002 in which the Phillies did not have a winning record.
6. This was Baltimore's first winning season since 1997. The Royals still haven't had a winning season since 2003. The Pirates haven't had a winning season since 1992.
7. The Red Sox had a losing record for the first time since 1997. This was the worst season for Boston since 1965.

I still wish the two champs would play in the World Series. I really hate the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteEspecially when the AL playoffs feature the team with the 7th-best record in the league.
ReplyDeleteAnd that 7th-best team is not playing in one of the play-in games.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be cool if someone would go back and rethink all of the seasons in the current divisional and playoff format--who would've made the playoffs, who would've likely won the post-season matchups and everything.
ReplyDeleteGO, A'S! 1-1 in top of third ...
Rats. 3-1, Tigers--final in Game 1.
