The ALCS started on Saturday, and for the third time in four nights the Yankees found themselves playing the 12th inning. Detroit dominated New York for most of the night, as the Yankees usual post-hitting woes seem to be even more severe than usual. But despite trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the 9th, the Yankees tied the game on two-run homers by Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez. All seemed well in Yankee-land -- but disaster struck in the 12th. Not only did the Tigers pick up the two runs they needed for a 6-4 victory, but Yankee captain Derek Jeter suffered an injury that will end his season.
In short, the Yankees lost the first game, they lost a home game, they lost a game where the Tigers didn't use Justin Verlander, and they lost Derek Jeter. On the whole, it's hard to see how things could have gone worse for the Bombers.
