As we've already noted, the last two divisional series ended in stirring fashion. The Yankees, behind C.C. Sabathia, finally eliminated Baltimore 3-1. And the World Champion Cardinals -- trailing by two runs with two outs in the ninth -- scored four runs to eliminate the Nationals 9-7.
So we are left with the following results:
NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISIONAL SERIES (Best of 5):
St. Louis beats Washington 3-2
San Francisco beats Cincinnati 3-2
AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISIONAL SERIES (Best of 5):
New York beats Baltimore 3-2
Detroit beats Oakland 3-2
I've often commented that the results of these short series are random, and these four divisional series certainly appeared to throw up random results. In fact, the lower-seeded teams won three of the four series. But looked at another way, the results do not seem to be all that random. Here's who's left:
The Tigers, who went to the ALCS last year.
The Yankees, who won the World Series in 2009.
The Giants, who won the World Series in 2010.
The Cardinals, who won the World Series in 2011.
These are some great teams, and I just hope the rest of the playoffs are as exciting as what we've seen so far.
