Meanwhile, amazing Adair ...
ReplyDeleteI would imagine that Cadiz's WHVO/Oldies1480.com will have tonight's Heath-Fort Campbell broadcast. I can confirm that the fantastic "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corporation just played moments ago!
ReplyDeleteI love "Rock the Boat." When I was about 10, my two favorite songs on earth were "Rock the Boat" and "American Pie." And both of those songs would rank very high on my list now.
DeleteConfirmed: Heath will be on WHVO/Oldies1480.com tonight, per Tom Rogers with the station:
DeleteThe Trigg County Wildcats locked up the #3 seed in the upcoming football playoffs, as they rolled over the Heath Pirates last week, 48-27. With the win, the Wildcats go to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the district. Trigg County will travel to either South Warren or Adair County in the first week of the playoffs. This weekend, it's a rare Saturday game for Trigg County, as the Wildcats make the trek into the Eastern Time Zone, to take on North Bullitt. Coverage will get underway Saturday afternoon at 4:00 on WKDZ 106.5 and wkdzradio.com.
There was no rust on the wings of the Fort Campbell Falcons last Friday night, as they came out of the bye week and hammered the Webster County Trojans 62-13. The win guarantees the Falcons the #1 seed in the playoffs, and a date on post with Hart County. Coming up this weekend, it's Homecoming, as the Falcons host the Heath Pirates in the district finale. Coverage of the Falcons and the Pirates will get started tonight at 6:00 on Oldies 96.5 WHVO and oldies1480.com.
We're supposed to get back to unseasonably warm weather next week, but, tonight, the forecast in western Kentucky is for low 40s with a little rain. And that means some of these boys are going to get cold as a well digger's bottom this evening.
ReplyDeleteMy dad used that "cold as a well digger's bottom" phrase quite frequently at this time of the year. Of course, he didn't say "bottom."
Dad cursed constantly. He was not at all Redd Foxx raunchy; his language, however, was always some shade of blue. "Well digger's {bottom}" didn't even really qualify for the babiest of baby blue for Dad. He didn't say it to be funny or to be colorful; if Dad wanted to be funny or colorful, he would be funny or colorful. Rather, when Dad--who had actually dug wells--said, "It's cold as a well digger's {bottom} out there," it was simply a weather report. And you knew you better grab a coat before you went out the door.
"Well digger's {bottom}" was, in fact, so tepid a profanity for Dad that Mom wouldn't even react with her "Oh, Bob" (playfully disapproving) or silent head shake (actually disapproving) when he used it. You have to know when you pick your battles, and chiding Dad for "well digger's {bottom}" would've been as silly as the one on-duty deputy sheriff in southern Hopkins County pulling over somebody for doing 37 in a 35 zone in downtown Mortons Gap. Mom wielded whatever degree of corrective power she possessed much more strategically.
For example, one time, when I was about 12 ... actually, I was exactly 12 because I remember I was playing with 1980-81 basketball cards in the floor at the very moment this happened ... Dad was up on a stepladder in my bedroom, nailing sheets of plastic to the window frames before the coldest of the Kentucky winter set in. It must've been after Thanksgiving, too, because he was singing (richly), "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town." Dad got to the line, "He knows if you've been sleeping/He knows if you're awake/He knows if you've been good or bad ..." And then Dad paused both the hammering and singing for a beat.
"He's a regular old smart {bottom}, isn't he?" Dad said from the stepladder to his 12-year-old boy in the floor, and we both laughed.
That one got an "Oh, Bob."

Fort Campbell High celebrated its 50th anniversary with last night's homecoming win over Heath. Per a terrific story by Megan Locke Simpson in The Fort Campbell Courier, the school is one of only two high schools on a U.S. military installation--the other being Fort Knox, also in Kentucky:
ReplyDelete“The main reason that Fort Campbell started was because of segregation in the ‘60s. Apparently at one time, the dependents of the military did go off post to Clarksville, but because of segregation they were sent to two or three different schools. Because of the blacks and the whites, they wouldn’t send them all to the same school … The administration decided that that wasn’t going to happen at Fort Campbell.”
The Falcons have scored 50 or more points in four of their last six games.

ReplyDeleteSo fitting that Heath ends its regular season next week against Lone Oak, which is coached by its original coach, Jack Haskins, and now again is quarterbacked by Cole Ousley, who might be the son or nephew or grandson or something of Matthew's and my awesome fifth-grade teacher.
ReplyDeleteWhile the Heath Pirates and the rest of Kentucky's 192-playoffs-bound teams would not dare look past their final regular-season opponents and on to the first round of the postseason, Jason Frakes did.
ReplyDeleteWow ... Ann Beckett, writing in The Marshall County Daily, about the home team: "Down 21-0 at halftime with two of Daviess County's touchdowns coming from interception returns, Coach Ron Barnard in his radio comments said, 'We have a lack of will and a lack of want to', the likes of which he hasn't seen in his 20 years of coaching."
ReplyDeleteYou don't have too many more chances to see Heath's football Pirates, so here are 227 of them.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be back, Eric. Someday there will be a new Heath High School.
DeleteAh, speaking of this, I bumped into a long-time McCracken County schools bus driver recently who told me that the longest commute to the new school will be from some of the homes in the current Lone Oak district (not Reidland, as I suspected). So maybe one day it will end up being the Lovelaceville South McCracken High Purple Racers.
