The United States men's soccer team -- which failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics -- just beat Mexico (who won the gold medal in London) at an exhibition match in Mexico City.
Normally, we at the Heath Post do not comment on exhibition games -- or "friendlies" as they are known in England. But soccer games between the United States and Mexico are never friendly. And, in fact, the United States had never beaten Mexico in Mexico. Before tonight, we were 0-23-1 against them down there. So among the small group of passionate fans of USA soccer, this was a big, big deal. (And my guess is that it was a big deal in Mexico, too.)
We will hope that this bodes well for our 2014 World Cup campaign.
I should point out that in the most important soccer game ever played between our two countries, the United States beat Mexico 2-0 in the Sweet 16 of the 2002 World Cup.
