Things got rolling in Kentucky high-school football Thursday night, with Lone Oak--the No. 8 team in the Associated Press Class 4A poll--ripping Marshall County, in Draffenville, 52-7; Reidland holding off visiting Fulton County, 21-18, and Union Larry A. Ryle being blanked, 35-0, by Colerain (Ohio).
Meanwhile, waaaaaaaaaay over in Salyersville, seat of the state's county with the state's highest unemployment rate, the big story was that the hometown Magoffin County High Hornets got on the field at all. "The football team itself is almost a microcosm of the community. We were knocked down. We battled back, and we're now going to play here."
And then they went out and won: 46-12 over Paintsville.
Here are the games that most interest me from the rest of this weekend's schedule:
Horse Cave Caverna at West Paducah Heath--Wrote Scott Wilson in the Glasgow Daily Times on Wednesday: "The Caverna High School football season is a long journey to the top with some pretty big obstacles standing in the way. The Colonels will run into their biggest obstacle of the season this week when they travel to Paducah on Friday night to face Heath High School." Both Caverna and Heath are 0-2; Caverna hasn't yet scored this season.
Paducah Tilghman (AP 3A No. 3) at Mayfield (AP A No. 1)--Ninety-ninth meeting.
Louisville Saint Xavier (AP 6A No. 2) at Bowling Green (AP 5A No. 1)--After Louisville Trinity (27 straight) and Fort Thomas Highlands (22), Bowling Green has the state's longest winning streak: 17 games, including 28-20 at St. X last season.
Elizabethtown John Hardin (AP 5A No. 2) at Meade County--The visiting Bulldogs received one vote for No. 1 in their class (No. 1 Bowling Green got all 11 others), but Chuck Jones points out back in the hometown paper that 2-0 starts are nothing new for John Hardin and that both of the team's foes so far are 0-2.
Danville (AP 2A No. 7) at Boyle County (AP 4A No. 3)
Well, game on! Some DHS students painted our bell last night. Last time bell was messed with, we were up 50-0 at half! twitter.com/BigRebelNation…
— Boyle County Rebels (@BigRebelNation) August 31, 2012
Henderson County (AP 6A No. 10) at Christian County (AP 5A No. 6)--Advantage Christians over Hens in recent Clashes of Cols.
Murray (AP 2A No. 5) at Graves County--The home crowd might be a little lively.
Go NB Eagles, we are backing you
To our colors, green and gold
Forever we'll be true
Rah, Rah, Rah
Go NB Eagles, on to vic-tor-y
Fight for the fame
Of our great name
Go you Eagles,
Win this Ga-a-ame
Boone County at Union Randall K. Cooper (AP 5A No. 5)--The home-standing Jaguars are 2-0, having beaten two teams that they had never previously beaten.
Crestwood South Oldham at Hebron Estates North Bullitt (AP 5A No. 8)--Yes, Hebron Estates. Per Wikipedia: "North Bullitt High School is a school located in Hebron Estates, Kentucky, a small city served by the post office of nearby Shepherdsville. Opened in 1975, it is part of the Bullitt County Public Schools district." And the fight song ...
To our colors, green and gold
Forever we'll be true
Rah, Rah, Rah
Go NB Eagles, on to vic-tor-y
Fight for the fame
Of our great name
Go you Eagles,
Win this Ga-a-ame
Williamsburg (AP A No. 6) vs. Pineville and Middlesboro at Bell County (AP 3A No. 5T) in the City/County Bowl on Log Mountain--Home-standing County will be forced to start a freshman at quarterback.
Erlanger Lloyd Memorial at Garrard County (AP 3A No. 10)--Freshman quarterback for the home-standing Golden Lions, too, against the 2-0 Juggernauts?
Prestonsburg (AP 2A No. 10) at Lawrence County--The visiting Blackcats, who finished 5-6 in 2011, are 2-0 after overcoming two-touchdown deficits in each of their first two games (both in Prestonsburg).
Covington Holmes at Beechwood (AP A No. 3)
Frankfort (AP A No. 4) at Green County
Fleming County at Fairview (AP A No. 5)
Pikeville (AP A No. 10) at Raceland (AP A No. 7)
A true football team doesn't play for themselves. They play for the tradition, the greats that wore the Maroon and White#PantherTradition

Unanimous Class 4A No. 1 Highlands, unanimous Class 6A No. 1 Trinity and Class A No. 2 Hazard--the defending champs, who received five of this week's votes for No. 1 in their class to Mayfield's six--are among this weekend's idle teams.
Previous reports:
Some great games this week. Mayfield almost always beats Tilghman, so I would go see BGHS play St. X.
ReplyDeleteYeah, those two are huge, obviously. I went to college with a guy from Caverna, and I visited his home and school a few times--it felt a lot like Heath. So that's the one I would probably go to.
DeleteThat game in Danville would be fun, and I'm just guessing that Pikeville-at-Raceland is going to be a big throwdown for the home crowd, especially. I didn't give it sufficient love in this post, but Owensboro at Owensboro Catholic is a monster for the locals. And, besides, Owensboro has some great places to eat, so that would probably be my second choice behind the Heath sojourn.
Jason Frakes says Eastern has become Louisville's "buzz" team.
DeletePineville's coach: “Even the best high school teams have trouble going 12 plays without making a mistake.”
ReplyDeleteFinal: Williamsburg 70, Pineville 22
DeleteBoone County is 0-2, but the Rebels' coach isn't panicking.
ReplyDeleteFinal: Union Cooper 10, Boone County 0
DeleteSince ending a 19-game losing streak with a 21-20 win over LaRue County, Spencer County has won six of its 11 games. The Bears of Taylorsville head to Hodgenville to play LaRue County tonight.
ReplyDeleteFinal: LaRue County 14, Spencer County 12
DeleteSpencer County missed a 35-yard-field-goal try at the end.
DeleteYeah, it looks like this Pikeville game is pretty huge to the folks of Raceland.
ReplyDeleteThe second annual Ram Reunion is scheduled for Aug. 31 before the Raceland?s home opener against Pikeville. Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. at the high school?s old gymnasium. Raceland will announce the opening of its football Hall of Fame at the event, which attracted about 250 people last year. This years reunion will be more informal than last years due to being on a Friday, but we will be tailgating and opening the gym for people to socialize some before the game, so it will be great to see everyone who can make it out. We hope to have our first home game on a Saturday next year so we can have a nice big reunion again!
Raceland-Worthington High fight song:
DeleteOn, On Raceland High,
We are right for the fight tonight,
Hold that ball and hit that line,
Every Raceland Boy will shine,
We'll fight, fight, fight for our colors bright,
and we'll march to that old victory,
We will kick, pass and run til' the battle is won,
and
BRING HOME THE VICTORY!
Final: Raceland 54, Pikeville 14
DeleteWKDZ is so awesome:
ReplyDeleteThe Trigg County Wildcats rebounded from their season opening loss with an impressive 48-14 win over Todd County Central in the Wildcats home opener. This week, it's the Kentucky Machine & Engineering David Sadler Bowl, as the Wildcats will take on Crittenden County in the second game of the night. The Rockets are coming off of a 21-6 win over Hopkins Central in their opener last weekend. The first game of the Kentucky Machine & Engineering David Sadler Bowl will match up Hopkinsville against Greenwood. You can hear coverage of both contests beginning at 5:00pm Friday on WKDZ 106.5 and wkdzradio.com.
No power failure last week on post, as the Fort Campbell Falcons fought off a tough Russellville Panther team by the score of 34-27. It will be a battle of unbeaten this week at the 2-0 Falcons will host the Dragons from Warren Central. In what will be their toughest test of the season, the Falcons will face a Warren Central team that has big wins over Mayfield and Franklin-Simpson. Coverage of Fort Campbell and Warren Central from post will get underway Friday at 6:00pm on Oldies 96.5 and worldwide at oldies1480.com. Listen for special guest host, Dr. Jim Selbe from the sidelines!
The Falcons lost to Warren Central, but the Fort Campbell pictorial of Friday night's game is another winner. Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining ...
DeleteChannel 6 and the current Reidland coach think this is the first 3-0 start for the Greyhounds ever.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, if you think Blue Tornadoes coach Randy Wyatt sounds a little mellow about the big Mayfield-Paducah Tilghman game tonight, I will point out that the Cardinals' radio station, WYMC 1430 AM, just played "I've Never Been to Me" by Charlene less than two hours before kickoff.

Well, things are getting back to normal in Mayfield ... After its two-game losing streak (2011 state championship and 2012 season opener at Warren Central), the Cardinals blasted Madisonville-North Hopkins last week, and now they are up, 42-21, late against Paducah Tilghman. "Cardinals have absolutely won the battle up front," the WYMC commentator says.
ReplyDeleteMayfield intercepts. "I imagine we'll take a knee here," the WYMC commentator says. "We don't run it up on anyone here at Mayfield. We never have, no matter what anyone says."
DeleteSeven straight Cardinal wins in the series--longest streak in the 99-game history of the rivalry. 42-21 is the final.
DeleteMembers of Mayfield First United Methodist Church are asking attendees to bring a canned food item to the Mayfield-Tilghman football game tonight.

More finals from last night:
Delete-- Down 33-8 at half, Caverna made a big comeback in the West Paducah rain last night, but the Pirates hold on to claim their first victory of their final season. (Congratulations to the Colonels from Horse Cave, too, on logging their first points of the season.)
-- Bell County 50, Middlesboro 6. "It's Middlesboro-Bell," Bell County's coach told Jay Compton of the Middlesboro Daily News. "It’s a rivalry game, people jaw back and forth, the players go to the movies together, they date each other’s girlfriends and stuff. But I wish them the best the rest of the year. I’ll be for Middlesboro for every game they don’t play us."
-- North Hardin 21, Madisonville-North Hopkins 15. In Radcliff, the Maroons were in North Hardin territory but turned the ball over on a sack and fumble with 34.3 seconds remaining. That's Trojans coach Brent Thompson's first win in the land of Jaggerses.

-- Male 28, Western 0
-- Louisville Ballard 27, Seneca 6
-- Calloway County 43, Massac County (Ill.) 28
-- Trigg County 42, Crittenden County 21

Mike Marsee of Danville's Advocate-Messenger before the big Admirals-Rebels game: "A photo is circulating that shows the bell that Boyle players ring as they take the field bearing a fresh coat of blue paint, with the words 'Ghost In Blue' written on the supporting post. That paint has already been covered, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Admiral Stadium anchor has already been painted black or gold in retaliation. If you’re a player and that sort of thing gets you fired up, that’s fine, and that’s part of the fun, as long as it’s nothing more harmless than a coat of paint. (Oh, and if you’re over 18 and that sort of thing gets you fired up, grow up and shut up. This party belongs to the kids; you only get to sit and watch.)"
ReplyDeleteLarry Vaught after Danville's 28-21 win over Boyle County: "It was one of the most dramatic wins in the series’ illustrious history because Boyle had overcome a 21-6 deficit in the final 2 minutes Friday night, only to have Danville win the game on a 74-yard touchdown run by Jawan Grey with 64 seconds left that stunned both Danville and Boyle fans."
The Lone Oak-Marshall County series, which dated back to 1974, ended Thursday night in dry Draffenville with the Purple Flash's third straight victory. Before then, the Marshals had won eight straight in the series.
ReplyDeleteThey are Marshall in Draffenville, too.
DeleteLexington Christian won by three at Harlan with a 56-yard touchdown pass in the last minute.
ReplyDelete"The filthy animal defense lived up to its nickname," John Middleton writes in The Harlan Daily Enterprise after Harlan County's 55-0 win over visiting Gate City (Va.)
ReplyDeleteGRC is 0-3, but, man, those are some excellent helmets.
ReplyDeleteSt. X took a 22-13 halftime lead at Bowling Green's El Donaldson Stadium on a 22-yard touchdown pass, but the Tigers' quarterback, Austin Gahaher, was injured on the play and never returned. After yielding two touchdowns to open the second half, St. X took back the lead, 31-25, with 9:47 to go. Then Bowling Green regained advantage, 32-31, with 4:14 remaining. From there, St. X's final possessions ended with a sack and fumble recovery, interception return for a touchdown and interception. Final: 38-31, Purples.

Indeed, Franklin-Simpson won in Week 3, 25-17, at West Creek in Clarksville, Tenn. Congratulations, F-S first-year coach Doug Preston!
ReplyDeleteKevin Patton reports in The Gleaner that, despite being 0-3 in his previous overtime games at Henderson County, the Hens' coach, Clay Clevenger, stuck by his strategy to "always go for two if we go second" OT. It worked Friday at the Stadium of Champions in Hoptown: Henderson County 37, Christian County 36.
