R. Kelly is right now at the top of the pop R&B scene. His 2010 Love Letter was one of the best R&B albums of the year and now he's followed that up with another one Write Me Back. In between he has pinned solid songs for other pop artists like Jennifer Hudson, and through all of this what we have found is a singer/songwriter who is very confident and smart in his craft.
The only knock I've had on R. Kelly is that you knew one of his songs no matter who was performing it. With Write Me Back he is playing with older R&B influences and has shown a real growth in his writing as he's able to tap into these influences, modernize them, and make them sound unique not sound R. Kelly.
The only disappointing thing about this album is there aren't any real standout songs, but if you fall into the album and listen for the influences and how easily Kelly is moving about from one to the next you will find yourself fully enjoying this album for what it has to offer.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
I really like that album cover.
