Eric, what's the best way to drive from Murray to Brandenburg?
Henderson's WSON 860 AM, one of the world's terrific radio stations, is broadcasting the local Colonels' game with North Oldham, which is about to begin. So far, in the moments leading up to the first pitch, we've heard "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America, the Beautiful"--as well as a prayer from a minister at a Baptist church in Henderson. Now we have the WSON guy reading the lineups against the jingle that ESPN at least once used as the theme for its Major League Baseball telecasts.
ReplyDeleteYou know, it's funny you ask about that route again, because I had meant to answer the first time you asked but thought, "Oh, that's an easy one--up to Paducah and straight across old U.S. 60--I'll get to it whenever."
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Google Maps suggests a totally different and fascinating route.
North Oldham is held scoreless in the top of the first by Henderson County. WSON is reporting that the Colonels do not have their batting helmets--that, apparently, they were left behind on the team bus or back at the hotel or something. North Oldham is letting Henderson County use their black batting helmets at least in this bottom half of the first inning.
ReplyDelete"At least it wasn't the bats," says one of the WSON commentators.
At this point, I want to sincerely apologize again--as the 1982-83 Heath High School girls' basketball statistician--for leaving Betsy Hatler's name out of the official scorebook one game that season, resulting in her disqualification and a technical foul on the Lady Pirates when coaches Rodney Bushong and Vernon Edwards tried to sub her into the game.

DeleteHenderson Gleaner writer notes Colonels took batting practice here yesterday with helmets; guessing they were left at hotel.

Henderson took a gamble in hiring Thurman Thomas RT @kyhighs Delay: Henderson Co. forgot batting helmets, going to borrow from North Oldham
10:33 AM - 5 Jun 12
Henderson County--in North Oldham's batting helmets--leave a man on in the bottom of the first, and we're still scoreless heading to the second inning in Lexington.
ReplyDeleteThis, by the way, is the "2012 Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament."
ReplyDeleteHenderson County has opened a 3-0 lead on the Mustangs from Goshen, scoring two two-out runs in the second and adding a third after a leadoff triple in the ongoing third ...
ReplyDeleteThe North Oldham fight song is to be sung to Notre Dame's:
ReplyDeleteCheer, Cheer for North Oldham High,
The teal and black does wave in the sky,
Honor and truth our reward…
As we fight on with pen and sword,
Our team’s got spirit, our team’s got fight,
Come on you Mustangs, triumph tonight,
Together we push onwards to vict’ry for
North Oldham High!
GO MUSTANGS!
5-0, Henderson County, and the Cols are still batting in the fourth ...
ReplyDeleteThe 1956 Henderson City High School Flash baseball team apparently called itself the "Hens." I really, really, really like that, and I'm calling Henderson County the "Hens" the rest of this tournament.
ReplyDeleteThe Hens are in the van by 9-0 in the ongoing bottom of the fifth against Goshen North O ...

DeleteWe need to start putting more stuff about the history of HHS on this web page.
DeleteCheck out this guy's site. It's just fantastic. Fantastic.
DeleteBut, to your point, I got in shoutsout to Rodney Bushong, Butch Edwards and Betsy Hatler only this morning ... what else do you want from me?
DeleteI saw that, and I approved.
DeleteHens put the Mustangs out of their misery, 10-0 in five innings.
ReplyDeleteHow did I get this far in my life without having heard of Pascal Benson?
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Pascal Benson is the most talented athlete to ever hail from Henderson, KY. Pascal Ray Benson still stands today as the only athlete in Kentucky history to be named to the 1st team all-state in 3 sports in one year. A feat that is so rare, I was not able to find any other athlete that accomplished that feat in Kentucky or any state. ...
ReplyDeletePascal turned down a contract with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956, so he could play football for Blanton Collier at the University of Kentucky. Pascal said his only two regrets were not winning the state basketball title, and not playing basketball for Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky. He says he was just too beat and tired up to try to play basketball too.
... His favorite memories of Henderson as a student were obviously his sports prowess and the sock hops at City High Gymnasium after the home games.
Benson said that Bill Haley & his Comets were his favorite singing group. Pascal retired as a teacher at Henderson County High School in 1988, and opened his own driving school the same year. Pascal and his wife Elaine teach ballroom dancing today.
Terrific feature (by a really, really nice person) about Mr. Benson's retirement from driving instruction. Lake Barkley is such a great place; the lodge at the state park is just beautiful and dramatic--I'll bet he and Mrs. Benson eat there every so often.
DeleteMeade County's catcher has a mohawk. I'm actually surprised those came back.
ReplyDeleteI also never would've guessed that George Hendrick's pants style gained sway.
DeleteWhoever's doing the iHigh.com graphics is ready to get out and play 18 on this beautiful late-spring day. "Callaway" is retired in order in the top half of the first.
ReplyDeleteOn a different scoreboard graphic, it's "Callway."
DeleteGood game. Top of the fifth, and we're still scoreless. Couple of one-hitters going.
ReplyDeleteThrough five, and the Lakers have one more hit--but no more runs. Still scoreless.
ReplyDeleteCalloway County 0-2-1
ReplyDeleteMeade County 0-1-0
Middle of the sixth ...
Heartbreak for the Lakers ... Meade County singles to pen the seventh ... the Greenwave bunts the runner to second ... the next batter is intentionally walked, and then Calloway County gets a strikeout for Out 2.
ReplyDeleteWild pitch.
Wild pitch (on third strike for what would've been third out).
Meade County 1, Calloway County 0.
Well, at least they beat Murray.
DeleteIn first round's penultimate game, South Laurel loads bases with three walks in top of the first inning but can't push across a run against Ashland Blazer ...
ReplyDeleteFinals:

Excellent game reporting on NewCath-PRP from John Lachmann in the Kentucky Post:
ReplyDelete(NewCath pitcher Connor) Bartels went back out for the seventh, having thrown 100 pitches.
Junior first baseman Austin Beckman just missed an extra base hit when he lined a ball down the left field line to start the bottom of the seventh. But (Josh) Cain made a highlight-reel diving catch while running toward the foul line for the first out. ...
It was the first defensive chance of the game for Cain, and he did not play outfield in the regionals, as he pitched and was the DH in that tournament.
“I owe (Cain) breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Bartels said.
In addition to keeping the potential tying run off the bases, that out was important because with Beckman hitting in the seventh spot, Bartels could finish the game without facing the top of the order if he could retire the final two batters.
And he did just that. Bartels induced a pop up to first for the second out, and he struck out the final batter to end it.
