High School Baseball Update

Good job by Eric with yesterday's coverage from the State Tournament. There were some good games. Here were the scores:

Bishop Brossart 4, Pikeville 2
Lou. St. Xavier 4, Mercer Co. 0
S. Warren 2, Central Hardin 1
Woodford Co. 4, Powell Co. 3

Here are today's first-round matchups:

Henderson Co. v. N. Oldham
Lou. Pleasure Ridge Park v. Newport Cent. Catholic
Meade Co. v. Calloway Co.
Ashland Blazer v. S. Laurel

Eric, what's the best way to drive from Murray to Brandenburg?

  1. Henderson's WSON 860 AM, one of the world's terrific radio stations, is broadcasting the local Colonels' game with North Oldham, which is about to begin. So far, in the moments leading up to the first pitch, we've heard "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America, the Beautiful"--as well as a prayer from a minister at a Baptist church in Henderson. Now we have the WSON guy reading the lineups against the jingle that ESPN at least once used as the theme for its Major League Baseball telecasts.

  2. You know, it's funny you ask about that route again, because I had meant to answer the first time you asked but thought, "Oh, that's an easy one--up to Paducah and straight across old U.S. 60--I'll get to it whenever."

Indeed, Google Maps suggests a totally different and fascinating route.

  3. North Oldham is held scoreless in the top of the first by Henderson County. WSON is reporting that the Colonels do not have their batting helmets--that, apparently, they were left behind on the team bus or back at the hotel or something. North Oldham is letting Henderson County use their black batting helmets at least in this bottom half of the first inning.

"At least it wasn't the bats," says one of the WSON commentators.

At this point, I want to sincerely apologize again--as the 1982-83 Heath High School girls' basketball statistician--for leaving Betsy Hatler's name out of the official scorebook one game that season, resulting in her disqualification and a technical foul on the Lady Pirates when coaches Rodney Bushong and Vernon Edwards tried to sub her into the game.

  4. Henderson County--in North Oldham's batting helmets--leave a man on in the bottom of the first, and we're still scoreless heading to the second inning in Lexington.

  7. The 1956 Henderson City High School Flash baseball team apparently called itself the "Hens." I really, really, really like that, and I'm calling Henderson County the "Hens" the rest of this tournament.

    4. But, to your point, I got in shoutsout to Rodney Bushong, Butch Edwards and Betsy Hatler only this morning ... what else do you want from me?

    1. Terrific feature (by a really, really nice person) about Mr. Benson's retirement from driving instruction. Lake Barkley is such a great place; the lodge at the state park is just beautiful and dramatic--I'll bet he and Mrs. Benson eat there every so often.

  13. Whoever's doing the iHigh.com graphics is ready to get out and play 18 on this beautiful late-spring day. "Callaway" is retired in order in the top half of the first.

  14. Good game. Top of the fifth, and we're still scoreless. Couple of one-hitters going.

  15. Through five, and the Lakers have one more hit--but no more runs. Still scoreless.

  17. Heartbreak for the Lakers ... Meade County singles to pen the seventh ... the Greenwave bunts the runner to second ... the next batter is intentionally walked, and then Calloway County gets a strikeout for Out 2.

    Wild pitch.

Wild pitch (on third strike for what would've been third out).

Meade County 1, Calloway County 0.
