Two of the four groups have been decided at the European soccer championships. Here they are (teams in bold advance to the knockout round):
GROUP A:
1. Czech Republic: 2-1-0 (6 points)
2. Greece: 1-1-1 (4)
3. Russia: 1-1-1 (4)
4. Poland: 0-1-2 (2)
In the last round of the group stage, Greece stunned Russia 1-0 to advance to the knockout rounds. Greece won the tie-breaker because of its victory over Russia. It was a devastating defeat for the Russians, who opened the tournament with an easy 4-1 victory over the Czechs, but who fell apart after that.
GROUP B:
1. Germany: 3-0-0 (9 points)
2. Portugal: 2-1-0 (6)
3. Denmark: 1-2-0 (3)
4. Netherlands: 0-3-0 (0)
Germany looks great so far. The Netherlands, who went to the final of the World Cup in 2010, were unexpectedly terrible.
So two of the quarter-final matches are now set:
06/21/12: Czech Rep. v. Portugal
06/22/12: Germany v. Greece
