College Baseball Update

The Super-Regionals are mostly done. Here's where things stand on the Road to Omaha:

Gainesville Super Regional:
Florida 7, N. Carolina St. 1
Florida 9, N. Carolina St. 8 (10 innings)

The number one-seeded Gators advance to the College World Series for the third straight year. Last year they lost in the finals to South Carolina.

Columbia Super Regional:
S. Carolina 5, Oklahoma 0
S. Carolina 0, Oklahoma 0 (6th inning) (rain delay)

The Gamecocks are going for their third straight national title.

Eugene Super Regional:
Kent St. 7, Oregon 6
Oregon 3, Kent St. 2

This Super Regional will be decided tomorrow.

Waco Super Regional
Baylor 8, Arkansas 1
Arkansas 5, Baylor 4

With the bases loaded and a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth, Baylor pitchers hit two Arkansas batters in a row to lose the game 5-4. These two former members of the Southwest Conference will decide this Super Regional tomorrow.

Los Angeles Super Regional
UCLA 6, TCU 2
UCLA 4, TCU 1

The Bruins lost in the finals to South Carolina in 2010.

Baton Rouge Super Regional
LSU 5, Stony Brook 4 (12 innings)
Stony Brook 3, LSU 1
Stony Brook 7, LSU 2

Stony Brook was a number 4 seed from Long Island who stunned everyone to even get this far, while LSU has won national titles in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, and 2009. After Stony Brook lost the first game in heart-breaking fashion (LSU hit game-winning homers in the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings to stay alive), I assumed the Seawolves would collapse. But Long Islanders are made of sterner stuff. The men from Mets country roared back with two wins, and they are going to Omaha. Newsday reports that they are the first team from the New York area to reach the CWS since St. John's in 1980.

Tucson Super Regional
Arizona 7, St. John's 6
Arizona 7, St. John's 4

The Johnnies were not able to join the Seawolves in Omaha, although they did very well in this tournament. If more East Coast teams start doing this well, college baseball could really take off in terms of popularity.

Tallahassee Super Regional
Florida St. 17, Stanford 1
Florida St. 18, Stanford 7

Amazingly, the Seminoles are going to the CWS for the 21st time -- but they have never won the title.

  1. It amazes me that Florida State has never won it.
