Today Spain beat Croatia 1-0, while Italy beat Ireland 2-0. So Group C finishes as follows (teams advancing to the knockout round are in bold):
Group C:
Spain: 2-0-1 (7 points)
Italy: 1-0-2 (5)
Croatia: 1-1-1 (4)
Ireland: 0-3-0 (0)
With the exception of Ireland, this has been a great tournament for countries getting hammered by the economic crisis. Of the so-called PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Spain) -- the European countries supposedly most vulnerable to the crisis -- all but Ireland have now advanced to the quarter-finals.
