Album Review: Port of Morrow by The Shins

I've never been the big Shins fan that my wife is, but I don't mind them. This album though feels different. A bit more rock and rooted than their previous stuff and I have found myself comparing it to Pete Townsend's All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. That is extremely high praise from me and I would say if you are a big fan of Chinese Eyes and you want something modern to give a listen to, then give this a spin and see what you think.

Lyrically these guys are nowhere close to Townshend, but there is something about the feel of the album that works and in fact the second track, "Simple Song," feels like it comes directly inspired by Townshend.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.

  1. I recommend that everyone read "The Westing Game," a great novel about a group of people trying to win a fortune.

  2. I would like more coverage of other records and events on which you and your wife disagree. This is exactly the type of sass that the HP needs.

  3. Two things: This really does sound and feel like a Townshend song, and I stand by my June 5 comment.
