NBA Update

Here's what's been happening.

Last night, the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Clippers in L.A. to tie that series at 3 games each.  It will be decided tomorrow.

Earlier tonight, the Celtics beat Philly by one point in the first game of their second-round matchup.

Right now, with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Lakers lead Denver 76-75 in Game 7 of their first-round series.  It would be fairly stunning if the Lakers blew the last three games of the series -- including Games 5 and 7 at home.  The winner will move on to play Oklahoma City in the next round.

  1. Ty Lawson has 24 points for Denver so far. Kobe has only 14 for the Lakers. But Stevie Blake (who I remember as a back-up at Maryland) has 16 points in only 22 minutes of action.

  2. Los Angeles 83 - 78 Denver (5:21 left)

Blake hits another three-pointer to put the Lakers up 5. He is 5-5 from three-point range in this game.

  3. Los Angeles 84 - 78 Denver (3:40 left in 4th Quarter)

The Lakers have cranked up their defense down the stretch, and the Nuggets just cannot score.

  4. Los Angeles 94 - 86 Denver (31 seconds left in 4th Quarter)

At one point, the Nuggets were ahead 73-69, but the Lakers outscored them 25-13 down the stretch, as the Nuggets simply had no consistent half-court offense. This is a great example of how older teams usually beat younger teams in the NBA playoffs. Or it could also be an example of how everyone beats teams coached by George Karl in the NBA playoffs.

So the Lakers will move on for a highly anticipated match-up with Oklahoma City. L.A. has more experience than the Thunder, but they will need more than experience to beat Kevin Durant and company.
