Real Madrid 2 - 1 Bayern Munich (Halftime) (aggregate score 3-3)

Yesterday, Chelsea stunned Barcelona to reach the final of the UEFA Champions' League.  Today, Bayern Munich is trying to do the same to the other Spanish powerhouse -- Real Madrid.  Bayern Munich won the first leg in Germany, 2-1.  But Real Madrid quickly scored two goals in the first 14 minutes of this game to take a 2-0 lead in this leg, and a 3-2 aggregate lead.  Things were looking very good for the favored Spaniards -- but then Bayern was awarded a penalty in the 27th minute, and their goal made the score 2-1, and the aggregate score 3-3 -- with both teams tied on away goals.  So at this point, we have a pure tie, meaning that if the score ends as it is, we will get extra time -- and possibly, penalty kicks.

  1. 70 minutes gone. Still all tied. Since this match is tied, both teams are going to play extremely conservatively.

This is the soccer that most Americans don't like -- the kind where both sides are playing extremely negative soccer in order to avoid giving up a match-deciding goal. It's the opposite of the fun soccer you get when one team is behind. That's why the first half -- when one team or the other was fighting from behind -- was so much more interesting than this one.

  4. 90 minutes gone. Still tied.

See, if you really cared about this game, this would be really dramatic -- because the game could be decided at any moment. But if you don't care, then you know you're probably waiting for penalty kicks, and those are just terrible.

  5. Heading into Extra Time. Still tied.

There will be 30 minutes more, and then penalty kicks (if they're still tied.)

I would write more, but there's really nothing to say. Both teams would rather lose on penalty kicks than take the chance of giving up a game-deciding goal. So here we are.

  9. 120 minutes gone. Penalty kicks!

(That exclamation point is sarcastic. I hate penalty kicks.)

  10. My rule in penalty kicks is that I want the best team to win the game -- because no one should pull an upset through penalty kicks.

In this case, I think Real Madrid is the better team, so I hope they win.

  11. Real Madrid 2 - 1 Bayern Munich (3-3 aggregate) (Bayern wins 3-1 on Penalty Kicks)

Oh, well. The Germans are famous for always winning on penalty kicks, and they did so again. So we have two huge upsets in two days. What a rough week for Spanish soccer. It reminds me of the weekend in March 1979 where UNC and Duke were both knocked out of the NCAA's in Raleigh.

So Bayern Munich will be heavy favorites to capture their fifth European Cup when they take on Chelsea on the Champions' League Final. They are better than Chelsea -- and they will be playing the Final on their home field in Munich.

This will be the first final between an English club and a German club since Manchester United beat Bayern Munich in 1999.
