I was very critical of Mitch Barnhart, the UK athletic director, back in the bad old days of Tubby Smith and Billy Gillispie. And I still think most of the credit for hiring John Calipari should go to the UK fans who insisted upon it. But look at what UK has done this year:
1. The football team finally beat Tennessee.
2. The rifle team finished number 2 in the country
3. The women's basketball team won the SEC and went to the Elite 8.
4. The men's basketball team won the National Championship.
5. The baseball team is ranked number 3 in the country.
I can't ever remember a year when UK was nationally competitive in so many sports. So this is my official apology to Mitch Barnhart, who is clearly doing a better job than I thought he was.
And now a UK senior from Pewee Valley has been named SEC men's tennis player of the year. Per John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader, Eric Quigley is the nation's third-ranked singles player.
