Well, Tiger's not back after all. For us middle-aged golf fans, watching Tiger stagger around Augusta National was like watching Muhammad Ali get pounded by Larry Holmes or like watching Larry Bird lying on his back during Celtic games -- undeniable evidence that no one beats Father Time.
But we're still on pace for a potentially very dramatic Masters. Phil is only 3 shots off the lead, and an array of stars are in the Top 10. And besides, Tiger did make the cut, so he gets the next two days to practice. Maybe he'll be in better shape for the U.S. Open.
Finally, we should pay a tribute to Freddie Couples. Until last year, only one golfer over 50 (Raymond Floyd) had ever shot 139 for the first two rounds of the Masters. The 52-year-old Couples has now done it two years in a row:
T1. F. Couples: -5 (72+67=139)
T1. J. Dufner: -5 (69+70=139)
T3. B. Watson: -4 (69+71=140)
T3. S. Garcia (ESP): -4 (72+68=140)
T3. R. McIlroy (NIR): -4 (71+69=140)
T3. L. Oosthuizen (RSA): -4 (68+72=140)
T3. L. Westwood (ENG): -4 (67+73=140)
T8. M.A. Jimenez (ESP): -3 (69+72=141)
T8. M. Kuchar: -3 (71+70=141)
T8. P. Lawrie (SCO): -3 (69+72=141)
