Baseball Preview Issue

This is pretty straightforward. The University of Kentucky has won the NCAA basketball tournament eight times: 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, and 2012. The last six times the Wildcats won the national championship in basketball, the New York Yankees won the World Series.

Thus, I am picking the Yankees to go all the way this year.

Other key points:

1. I like "Miami Marlins" much better than "Florida Marlins."
2. On the other hand, the Florida Marlins won two World Series, and I think it will be along time before the Miami Marlins catch them.
3. The Cardinals will miss Albert Pujols, but they are better off spending the money on other players.
4. The new wild card rule is the worst rule in the history of baseball, which is really saying something given some of the changes baseball has made in recent years.
5. The folks who are telling you that the Nats have a good chance at making the NL playoffs are kidding themselves.
6. I'm really, really happy that Magic Johnson is now a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
7. The old Cardinal uniforms are so much cooler than the new Marlins uniforms that it makes my teeth hurt. Twenty years from now, kids will wear the 2012 Miami jersey in a very ironic way.
8. On the other hand, the new Marlins uniforms are better than the old Marlins uniforms.
9. Western Kentuckians are basking in the glow of a Cardinals World Series victory that was immediately followed by a UK basketball championship. That has never happened before, so I hope everyone enjoys it. (I never said this to anyone, but all through the basketball season, I was afraid that the Cardinal fans in western Kentucky had already used up their sporting luck.)

  1. A magazine that gets distributed with my local newspaper some Sundays, Athlon Sports, recently ran a letter to the editor from a woman in Catlettsburg advocating for Brett Butler's induction to the Hall of Fame.
