You pretty much know what to expect from a Kelly Clarkson album and that's what you get here. Clarkson has become a very professional singer and she has no trouble here moving from dance pop, to ballad, to Pinkish punk rock.
There are though a few problems with the album. There isn't any one song on the album that really jumps out. And for a 13 track pop album that's a problem I think. Second as Clarkson is approaching 30 it would be nice if she could move away from every song being about relationship heartbreak. She gets writing credit on about half the songs here so maybe she'll move to something a bit more meaningful as she begins to develop as a writer. Most importantly though the album doesn't have any real direction to it. It feels like a collection of 13 singles as she moved from producer to producer and so the only thing connecting the album is Clarkson herself. What she shows is that she can carry an album on her own, but the listener is left thinking that there is more potential there than is being tapped.
Like many singers it would be good to see what Clarkson could do if she were matched with a writer/producer who could put together an album for her that used her strengths and stretched her abilities.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
Kelly Clarkson turned 30 just yesterday, in fact. Happy belated birthday, @Kelly_Clarkson!
ReplyDeleteI liked her on the first season of Idol, but I'll have to admit that I was rooting for Justin Guarini. He's from Columbus, Ga., and I lived in that town for a little while. Really liked it.
