The 2012 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament winds up today with an 8 p.m. Central championship at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, and it sure looks like we're headed for a clash between the two top-rated teams in the state.
But, of course, as we always say, Basketball Games Aren't Played At The Heath Post! Here are today's semifinals:
-- Paul Laurence Dunbar Lady Bulldogs vs. Alfred Victor duPont Manual Lady Crimsons of Louisville, 10 a.m. Central
-- Marion County Lady Knights of Lebanon vs. Lincoln County Lady Patriots of Stanford, 11:30 a.m. Central

-- Louisville Manual 71, Montgomery County Indians of Mount Sterling 33
-- Marion County 67, Hopkinsville Lady Tigers 30
-- Lincoln County 72, Magoffin County Lady Hornets of Salyersville 59
And here are the first-round results from Wednesday and Thursday:

Lincoln County has now claimed its first two Sweet Sixteen wins ever. You can listen to the Lady Pates shoot for No. 3 at Stanford's WPBK (and, until then, some fantastic tunes and, right now, another of those swap-shop shows), or you can follow the KHSAA radio and TV coverage.
As we also always say: The Heath Post ... We're Here To Help!

Anderson County played 3 teams in final 8 & went 2-1. Lady Cats beat Lincoln early in the season. (Also beat Montgomery Co. Lost to Dunbar)
10:18 PM - 9 Mar 12
If I was elected mayor of any town or city in America, the first thing I would do is make a law that the newspaper had to go and hire John Herndon away from The Anderson News to come and cover all of the local teams.
ReplyDeleteWPBK calls its swap shop, "The General Store."
ReplyDeleteCheck that ... "The Spurlin Funeral Home General Store."
ReplyDeleteHalftime, and Manual leads Dunbar, 42-35 ...
ReplyDelete5:11 to play in the first semi, and Louisville Manual is up 12 ... appears that either Marion County or Lincoln County will not have the benefit that Rockcastle County enjoyed last March of playing Bearettes in the Saturday-night final who had played a Saturday-morning overtime semifinal ...
ReplyDeleteWPBK is having to delay its pregame broadcast while Manual polishes off Bunbar. The Bearettes' lead is 20.

ReplyDeleteMarion County has beaten its three by seven, 37 and 21.
Manual and Marion County--No. 1 and 2 in The Courier-Journal Litkenhous Ratings--split their two meetings in the regular season. Marion County won at home, 63-61, on Jan. 14, and Manual (35-2) has won 21 consecutive games since. There will be at least 10 future Division I players on the floor tonight when No. 1 Manual meets No. 2 Marion County in Sweet 16 final at 9 (Eastern).
2:33 PM - 10 Mar 12
The KHSAA absolutely should move these games to accommodate UK's schedule.
ReplyDeleteUPDATE: The University of Kentucky Wildcats defeated the University of Florida Gators 74-71 in the semi-final of the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament. Tomorrow the Cats will play for the title at Noon Central time against either Vanderbilt or Ole Miss. Details to follow.
ReplyDeleteThis is Marion County's third-straight trip to the girls' Sweet Sixteen under sixth-year head coach Trent Milby. Before advancing to the semifinals last season, the Lady Knights had won one game in five trips to the girls' Sweet Sixteen--61-52 over Warren East in 1995. In addition to that season and in 2011, Marion County advanced to the state tournament in 1975, 1980, 1982 and 2010. In 1975, the first season that the KHSAA put on a girls' tournament, the Lady Knights lost, 41-27, in the first round to Monticello. That tournament and the next nine after it were played at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum in Richmond.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to last season, Louisville Manual advanced to the girls' championship in 2011, losing 36-34 to Lexington Catholic. The Lady Crimsons have advanced to five other state tournaments: 1988, 1989, 1990 2000 and 2008. Manual has never lost in the first round, and it has lost in the quarterfinals only once, in 1988. Coach Stacy Pendleton is in his eighth season.

Four minutes in, and Manual is up, 7-6. These two teams are obviously, obviously, obviously the sweetest of the Sweets.
ReplyDelete12-10, Marion County, and the Lady Knights have a free throw coming back after a break in action with less than two minutes to play in the first quarter ...
ReplyDeleteThrough one quarter, Manual leads, 14-13 ...
ReplyDelete10-0 Manual run to open the second quarter. With 4:43 to play in the first half, Marion County gets a couple of free throws to break the string and pull with 24-15.
ReplyDeleteHalftime: Manual 30, Marion County 23.
