One and done: Girls' Sweet Sixteen

You spend one evening of "quality time" with your wife and your 3-year-old, and look what happens.

A Magoffin County win would be Story of the Tourney so far, following tornado destruction in Salyersville last week
8:07 PM - 8 Mar 12

So, of course, ...

Magoffin County 63
Ashland Blazer 59

And, then, in the nightcap ...

We're headed to overtime! Lincoln County and Clay County tied at 46. Watch it live on bit.ly/AgPdgk #khs16 #khsgbk

Lincoln County 56
Clay County 50

Stanford's WPBK must've been going craycray over this one. Indeed, they're still talking about their "Lady Pates" on the morning show right now. Some woman who called in for the birthday club or whatever they call it on this radio station told one of the guys that all she wants for her birthday is another Lincoln County victory.

Here are today's quarterfinals in the 2012 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green:

-- Suda E. Butler Traditional Bearettes of Louisville vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar Lady Bulldogs of Lexington, noon Central

-- Alfred Victor duPont Manual Lady Crimsons of Louisville 50 vs. Montgomery County Indians of Mount Sterling, 1:30 p.m. Central

-- Hopkinsville Lady Tigers vs. Marion County Lady Knights, 6:30 p.m. Central

-- Magoffin County Lady Hornets of Salyersville vs. Lincoln County Lady Patriots of Stanford, 8 p.m. Central

And here were the first-round results from Wednesday and Thursday:

-- Louisville Butler 54, Glasgow Lady Scotties 49
-- Lexington Dunbar 72, Boone County Lady Rebels of Florence 70
-- Louisville Manual 50, Perry County Central Lady Commodores of Hazard 41
-- Montgomery County 60, Muhlenberg County Lady Mustangs of Greenville 43
-- Hopkinsville 56, Marshall County Lady Marshals of Draffenville 52
-- Marion County 56, Walton-Verona Bearcats 49
-- Magoffin County 63, Paul Blazer Kittens of Ashland 59
-- Lincoln County 56, Clay County Lady Tigers of Manchester 50

Three teams--Hopkinsville, Magoffin County and Lincoln County--yesterday earned their first-ever state-tournament victories, and Hoptown and the Lady Pates did it against teams that had won state championships (Marshall County won in 1982 and '84, and Clay won in 1989).

  1. Excellent. Clayton Homes of Stanford uses a variation of the Frankie Valli/Bee Gees' "Grease" for a jingle. Instead of "grease is the word," they sing, "We'll save you more."

  2. Pep busses leave Lincoln County High School at 5:30 p.m. (4:30 Central). Costs $2 to ride the bus and $11 to get in the game.

  3. Woman selling her porcelain dolls ... says she "can't take care of them anymore" ... also asking for help in getting a wheel-chair ramp built and for prayers ...

  4. New Salem Baptist and Hustonville Baptist churches, both of Hustonville in Lincoln County, are accepting donations of cleaning supplies and tools today and Saturday. They're leaving Sunday morning to assist in storm cleanup.

  5. Great job, Eric! I always like the radio coverage.

  6. WPBK is now playing the national anthem.

  7. Oh, they play it every day at this time, with the sponsorship of the local American Legion post.

  8. As far as I know, they had nothing to do with the national anthem, but it's been a pretty big morning on WPBK for "and the Bee Gees." Not long after we got that terrific home-builders commercial that interpreted "Grease" by Frankie Valli and the Bee Gees, we got to hear the superb "Heartbreaker" by Dionne Warwick and the Bee Gees.

  9. UPDATE: The University of Kentucky Wildcats defeated the LSU Tigers 60-51 today in the quarter-finals of the SEC Tournament in New Orleans. The Cats run their record to 31-1 and advance to tomorrow's semi-finals. More details to follow.

  10. Well, I don't know how yesterday's quarterfinals turned out. I'm listening to Stanford's WPBK to get the news, as opposed to simply checking Twitter or the KHSAA site.

  11. We spent yesterday afternoon hustling down to Murray to see a traveling Smithsonian exhibition on travel at Murray State's Wrather West Kentucky Museum. Today's the last day there for "Journey Stories," and let me just say that it was a delight. If you happen to live in Marion, for example, and say you find watching the UK games in real time to be too distressing and are going to wait to learn whether the Cats beat Florida before deciding whether to watch, I would highly recommend spending today checking out the Wrather. Even if the fantastic Smithsonian thing in the room for traveling exhibits isn't your bag, the standing stuff in the rest of the museum is all great.

  12. Birthday wishes coming up this hour ... sunny forecast ... and now another song ...

I think the Lady Pates must've lost to Magoffin County last night.

  13. Oh, man, "Eight Miles High" ... hardly anything better ever on the radio than this.

  14. Yeah, I can't imagine they would've made it through three snippets with the live DJ without some mention of the Lincoln County girls' basketball team if it had advanced to the state semifinals today. My guess is that our winners yesterday were Louisville Butler, Louisville Manual, Marion County and Magoffin County.

  15. Excellent. "Wild Nights" by Van Morrison.

  16. On our way down, we noted the terrific Marshals/Lady Marshals basketball teams billboard greeting visitors from the north side of Benton. I regret not taking a picture, as I can't seem to find one now. I'm pretty sure it's about here. It's been there for years.

  17. Well, I'm about to give up on waiting for the results on WPBK. I've heard a little ad where some members of the Lady Pates ask everyone in Stanford to go over to Diddle Arena to cheer on the team. They've been playing that all week, though, so that doesn't necessarily indicate that Lincoln County has another game today.

  18. Maybe the WPBK DJ had a great afternoon and evening in Murray with his wife and daughter, too, and was just waiting on The Heath Post to put up yesterday's scores.
