One and done: Boys' Sweet Sixteen

Today is typically my favorite episode of the year for The Joe B and Denny Show, when, in years past, they've broadcast from Rupp Arena in the two hours before the first game in the state tournament for high-school boys' basketball. Both Joe B and Denny are, indeed, on the air with Tony Cruise, but, alas, I've heard no 2012 PNC/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament talk thus far. This is a huge, huge letdown, as Cynthiana's Joe B always sounds so happy and thankful to be amid all the hoopla. Now it feels like we're going to have the Olympics without the opening ceremonies.

Today's first-round games:

-- Rowan County Vikings of Morehead vs. North Laurel Jaguars of London, 11 a.m. Central.

-- Southwestern Warriors of Somerset vs. Hopkinsville Tigers, 12:30 p.m. Central.

-- Bullitt East Chargers of Mount Washington vs. Trinity Shamrocks of Louisville, 5:30 p.m. Central.

-- Apollo Eagles of Owensboro vs. George Rogers Clark Cardinals of Winchester, 7 p.m. Central.

Tomorrow's:

-- Bowling Green Purples vs. Oldham County Colonels of Buckner, 11 a.m. Central.

-- Boone County Rebels of Florence vs. Knott County Central Patriots of Hindman, 12:30 p.m. Central.

-- Marshall County Marshals of Draffenville vs. Scott County Cardinals of Georgetown, 5:30 p.m. Central.

-- John Hardin Bulldogs of Elizabethtown vs. Johnson Central Golden Eagles of Paintsville, 7 p.m. Central.

  1. Well, this appears to be, by far and away, the place you want to go to listen to the Sweet Sixteen, but I can't get it to work on my Apple.

  2. OK, OK ... I think--I think--Tony Cruise might've just said, as today's Joe B and Denny Show was ending that the show would be broadcasting from Rupp Arena tomorrow and Friday. I so hope this is true. It might've been some sort of ear oasis on my part, however. Honestly, this has been a pretty bleak morning at the Kentucky desk.

  3. The first shot of the 2012 Sweet Sixteen is a made three-pointer by Rowan County's D.J. Townsend.

  4. All of these games should be on KET.

  5. And there should be huge, viewing parties at every Kentucky state park. In fact, it occurs to me that all of the Kentucky state parks should be identified in their names by their basketball regions.

  6. If I ever run for governor, here's my campaign slogan: "State Tournaments, State Parks ... Life, More Life!"

  7. Half: Rowan County 28, North Laurel 15. And Rowan's Adam Wing (zero for three on three-pointers) hasn't gotten hot yet.

  8. OK, here are my predictions for the tournament. I know this is late, but I was going to pick Rowan County anyway:

    Day 1:
    Rowan Co. over North Laurel
    Hoptown over Southwestern
    Trinity over Bullitt East
    Clark over Apollo

    Day 2:
    Bowling Green over Oldham Co.
Boone Co. over Knott Co. Central
    Scott Co. over Marshall Co.
    John Hardin over Johnson Central

    Day 3:
    Rowan over Hoptown
    Trinity over Clark
    BGHS over Boone Co.
    Scott Co. over John Hardin

    Day 4 (morning session):
    Trinity over Rowan
    Scott Co. over Bowling Green

    Day 4 (evening session):
    Trinity over Scott Co.

    1. I'm for Rowan, Hoptown, Trinity, Apollo, Marshall County, Bowling Green and Johnson Central (if J.J. Jude is on the team).

  9. We have a woman doing commentary on the official KHSAA radio broadcast. I think that's a first.

  10. Rowan County up 15 through three quarters. They've gotten 22 points, on eight-of-11 shooting, from the coach's son, Tyler Thacker.

  11. Easy win for Rowan County: 64-46.

North Laurel's first trip to Rupp doesn't last very long, but the radio folks think they could be back next year.

  12. I've moved over to WHOP, as I understand it is supposed to be on the air from Lexington any moment. In the meantime, the DJ just said that Adele is "quickly becoming the voice of her generation." I think that's what she said, anyway. She also read an ad for the Kentucky Bunco Bash. Bunco is fun.

  13. Cameron Mills, as usual, doing the color commentary for the second game on the KHSAA broadcast. I don't know what he does the rest of the year, but he's great at the State Tournament.

  14. Through one quarter: Hopkinsville 7, Southwestern 6.

  15. After sleepwalking through the first quarter, Hoptown is starting to roll. The Tigers lead the Southwestern Warriors 17-8 with 5:39 left in the 2d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wait, Hoptown's gone back to sleep. Their lead is now only 17-15 with 2:09 left in the first half.

  17. 12-0 run for Southwestern to close the half, and it's 20-17, Warriors, at the break.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And Southwestern ends the half on a 13-0 run. They lead 20-17 at the break.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe it was just a 12-0 run. I thought they said 13-0 on the radio.

I can only imagine how annoyed the WHOP guys are now.

  20. Eric, is Hopkinsville more of a WKU town or a Murray State town?

    1. This is a good question, and I appreciate your asking me. The answer is that I don't know. My guess is that it's more of a WKU town than a Murray town--but so far and away a UK town that it doesn't really matter. I always feel like everywhere in Kentucky except Murray, Bowling Green, Richmond, Louisville and Morehead and the communities within, say, 30 miles of each are solidly UK towns. I would say that even Murray, Bowling Green, Richmond and Morehead are probably 40-percent UK towns and that Louisville is probably 25-percent a UK town.

  21. Hoptown is playing terribly right now. They are losing 28-19 with 4:20 left in the third quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hoptown has made 16 turnovers in this game, compared to 9 for Southwestern.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hoptown loses 52-41. For a team that went 32-2, this was a terrible performance. Hopkinsville went:

15-53 from the field (28.3 percent)
6-13 from the line (46.2 percent)

and they committed 25 turnovers in a 32 minute game. Those are just terrible numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And yet Hoptown's loss was the closest result of the day.

    Evening-session results:

    Trinity 52, Bullitt East 32
    The George 56, Apollo 36

    Today's first-round games were decided by 18, 11, 20 and 20 points.
