One and done: Boys' Sweet 16

OK, good! Phew!

The Joe B and Denny Show is, indeed, on the air from the 2012 PNC/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Some retired coach who has been to every state tournament since 1958 is on with the coaches. The world suddenly feels OK again today.

We'll get back to the show in the comments. (Oh, hey, this guy coached Vinny Del Negro in eighth grade!) Meanwhile, here are today's first-round games:

-- Bowling Green Purples vs. Oldham County Colonels of Buckner, 11 a.m. Central. BG's WBGN is doing the whole tournament. Presumably, they'll use local broadcasters for this game; yesterday, they were using the KHSAA feed.

-- Boone County Rebels of Florence vs. Knott County Central Patriots of Hindman, 12:30 p.m. Central. (Now this guy on Joe B and Denny is talking about Wendell Ladner, John Brisker and Warren Jabali!)

-- Marshall County Marshals of Draffenville vs. Scott County Cardinals of Georgetown, 5:30 p.m. Central.

-- John Hardin Bulldogs of Elizabethtown vs. Johnson Central Golden Eagles of Paintsville, 7 p.m. Central. (And now Frank Ramsey!)

Yesterday's:

-- Rowan County Vikings of Morehead 64, North Laurel Jaguars of London 46.

-- Southwestern Warriors of Somerset 52, Hopkinsville Tigers 41.

-- Trinity Shamrocks of Louisville 52, Bullitt East Chargers of Mount Washington 32.

-- George Rogers Clark Cardinals of Winchester 56, Apollo Eagles of Owensboro 36.

  1. Wes Strader says all of the Hilltoppers love Ray Harper.

Coach Hall says he's proud of Western. Coach Crum said he had teams called "Cardiac Cards" but that even none of those had to come back from so far so consistently to keep their season alive.

    This is fantastic.

  2. Wait. Are they in Lexington or Louisville? I'll bet they're in Louisville. Now they're talking about King Kelly.

  3. Now somebody's on talking about Central City and Carr Creek, though, so I think we might, indeed, be at Rupp.

  4. "That's what this state tournament is all about ... bringing people together," Joe B says! I love it when he gets like this.

  5. Eighth anniversary of The Joe B and Denny Show today.

  6. Corky Withrow of Central City was on a little earlier, talking about a game against King Kelly Coleman of Wayland in which they both scored more than 40 points. "Nobody defended either one of us."

  7. Coach Crum said he's going to come back to Lexington tomorrow and spend all day watching the quarterfinals with Coach Hall.

  8. C-J's Jason Frakes, a Bowling Green High grad, Tweets that Oldham County is up 7-6 in first quarter on his alma mater--all seven points coming on eight free-throw tries.

  9. 9-0 Purples run puts Bowling Green ahead by four with a little more than three minutes to go. Oldham County, having big problems inbounding the ball, has already called three timeouts.

  10. Half: Oldham 27, Bowling Green 26. Maybe we're in for a day of close games now.

  11. I'm shocked that #CorkyWithrow isn't trending. The former Central City great has been on Joe B and Denny and now with Wes Strader at halftime of BG-Oldham game.

  12. Oldham County 35, Bowling Green 29 ... about three minutes to go in third quarter ...

  13. Through three quarters ... 36-34, Oldham County ...

  14. 6:41 to go, and Bowling Green and Oldham County are tied in the first of four first-round games today.

  15. Sam Gruber, a 5-foot-10 junior Oldham County guard, has made four of eight three-pointers, and the Colonels are back ahead, 45-40, with 2:50 to play. The Oldham Era reported that Gruber missed a few minutes at the end of the first half after he was hit inadvertently in the eye.

  16. Interesting stat from the BGHS game:

Here are the free throws for BGHS: 5-12
Here are the free throws for Oldham Co: 19-22

So even though BG actually has four more field goals than Oldham county, they are losing 53-45 with 38 seconds to go.

  17. Meanwhile, Murray State leads Colorado State 34-26 with 14:22 left in the second half.

  18. Oldham County wins 55-48. Long afternoon for the Purples.

But at least they beat Warren Central this year.

Regions 2, 3, and 4 have now all been eliminated.

  19. Final: Oldham County 55, Bowling Green 48.

Purples missed seven of 12 free-throw attempts; Colonels hit 20 of 24.

  20. Meanwhile, back home in Hoptown: Hail!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Murray leads Colorado State 41-26 with 9:34 left in the 2d half despite shooting only 4-12(!) from the free throw line. Murray shot 72.8 percent from the line this year.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Murray was just totally dominating the second half -- at one point they had outscored CSU 16-2. But now they've decided to put the ball in a deep freeze, much as UK did at the end of the game against Vandy. Murray still leads 43-32 with 7:12 to go. We will hope this strategy works out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Murray's strategy may rest on the premise that the Racers aren't going to make any shots today, so they just need to get through this game as best as they can. The Racers are now 5-17 from three point range and 6-17 from the line. But they lead 47-34 with 3:58 remaining.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Murray State wins! (Despite not playing very well). The Racers cruise home 58-41, and are into the round of 32 for the second time in the last three years.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm happy for Murray, but I feel obliged to point out that Colorado State may be the worst team ever given an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. They went 16-47 from the field, 3-13 from three-point range, and committed 22 turnovers. They weren't nearly as good as Tennessee State.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Knott County is actually making shots! They are 4-7 from behind the arc and 10-15 overall, and they lead Boone County 27-14 with 4:41 left in the 2d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Boone County, in full court press, has cut Knott County Central's lead from 14 to four with about 30 seconds to play in the first half ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Halftime: Knott County leads Boone County 32-27.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pomeroy had Murray winning by only 70-67, so he seriously underestimated the Racers or overestimated Colorado State.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The KHSAA radio play-by-play dude just noted that Knott County Central consolidated in 1975, bringing in past state champions Carr Creek and Hindman.

Oddly, though, he used a hard "I" sound in "Hindman." I always thought it was a soft "i."

  31. Knott County Central up seven ...

  32. Through three quarters: Knott County Central 49, Boone County 38.

  33. Patriots are up 15 with less than six minutes to play. Might be time to go ahead and join Joe B out in the food court.

  36. Knott County is rolling; they have gone 23-34 from the field in this game. They lead 71-54 with 17 seconds left. So far, they are the only team to shoot well in Rupp during the tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Knott County wins 71-54, and they advance to take on Oldham County.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Head coach B.B. King's Knott County Central squad makes six of 11 three-pointers, and the Patriots advance with a 71-54 win over Boone County.

  39. The orange unis are still working for Louisville. Wearing the "infra-red" uniforms they broke out at the Big East Tournament, the Cardinals roll past Davidson 69-62.

One way or another, three teams from the Commonwealth will be in the Round of 32.

  40. Benton's WCBL 99.1 FM/1290 AM, "Your Home for Marshall County Sports!" and "Serving Marshall County and all of Western Kentucky since 1954," is on the air from Rupp. The Marshals tip with Scott County in about 20 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 6:19 to play in Lexington ... Scott County 47, Marshall County 35 ...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Team Toyota rolls over the Marshals 59-43. All four teams from Western Kentucky lose in the first round. The Marshals were actually in the lead at halftime, but they fell apart in the second half. Like Hoptown, they will have a long drive home after losing on 2 games all year, only to be pasted in the state tournament.

But they did win their second regional title in a row, and that's a good year.

  43. John Hardin and Johnson Central were tied 30-30 after three quarters, but John Hardin pulls away for a 49-36 victory.

    So your quarterfinals are set:

    Rowan Co. v. Pulaski Southwestern
    Lou. Trinity v. Clark Co.
    Oldham Co. v. Knott Co.
    Scott Co. v. John Hardin
