One and done: Boys' round of 128*

Several upsets last night among last night's results in the drive to the 2012 PNC/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen® State Basketball Tournament, which resumes tonight:

First Region, at Murray State University's CSFB Center--Paducah Saint Mary vs. Carlisle County and Paducah Tilghman vs. Calloway County tonight. Last night: Marshall County, winner over Graves County, tuned up its "white out," and, per Joey Fosko of The Paducah Sun, "tiny Fulton City — the smallest public school in the First Region — notched only its second regional tournament win in 49 years."

Second Region, at Madisonville-North Hopkins Senior High School--Livingston Central vs. Henderson County and Hopkinsville vs. Caldwell County tonight.

Third Region, at Owensboro Sportcenter.

Fourth Region, at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green--Store away Barren County as a contender in 2013. Meanwhile, "despite giving it everything they had, and then some ..."

Fifth Region, at Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown.

Seventh Region*, at Bellarmine's Knights Hall--This region is already into the round of 32. The semifinals are Louisville Central vs. Louisville Saint Xavier and then Louisville Trinity vs. Louisville Ballard. That second game pits the state's No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the Litkenhous ratings. "Simply put," The Courier-Journal's Jason Frakes wrote today, "these teams don’t like each other too much."

Eighth Region, at Henry County High School in New Castle--John Herndon of The Anderson News Tweeted this morning that he and his wife would be celebrating their anniversary at tonight's game. Happy anniversary to the Herndons (and the Cashes, who got married in a fever on this date in 1968 in Franklin).

Ninth Region, at Northern Kentucky University's Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights.

10th Region, at Montgomery County High School in Mount Sterling--I wonder if
my main man, Darius Miller, has any superstitions about his current and former teams playing at the same time. Mason County plays Scott County in a quarterfinal at 6:30 Central.

11th Region, at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum in Richmond.

12th Region, at Pulaski County High School in Somerset.

13th Region, at Corbin's The Arena. "Coming in here your dream is to win three ballgames and get to Rupp Arena ... maybe next time ..."

14th Region, at Knott County Central High School in Hindman.

15th Region, at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.

Two other regions have pared to semifinalists and are off tonight:

Sixth Region, at Louisville Atherton High School and Bellarmine University's Knights Hall in Louisville.

16th Region, at Morehead State University's Johnson Arena.

  1. Jason Frakes of the C-J reports that it only took about 30 minutes to sell out the Seventh Region semi-finals, which will played in Bellarmine's tiny (capacity 2,500) gym. It seems odd that Marshall County has a gym seating around 7,000 people, and that the 7th Region can't find a site that holds more than 2,500.

On the other hand, those 2,500 people will be FIRED UP.

  2. Jason Frakes also reports that the Ballard/Trinity game won't be on the radio. That's a real shame.

  3. I wonder if it's on a student radio station.

  4. By the way, here are the last 10 winners of the Seventh Region:

    2011: Eastern
    2010: Ballard (lost in finals)
    2009: Eastern
    2008: Jeffersontown
    2007: Ballard (lost in finals)
    2006: Jeffersontown (STATE CHAMPS)
    2005: Ballard
    2004: Trinity
    2003: Ballard (lost in finals)
    2002: Male

I can't get over that Ballard lost the state title game three times from 2003 to 2010.

St. X hasn't been to the state tournament since 1995.

  5. In the Seventh Region, St. X cruises to a pretty easy 70-59 win over Central. So the folks in Louisville could be looking at another big Trinity/St. X game -- this one in roundball.

  6. 12th Region ... Lincoln County trails Somerset Southwestern, 24-17, at the half. Behind the halftime interview on Stanford's WPBK-FM, you can hear one of the bands playing the excellent "Hey Ya" by Outkast. Sounds good!

  9. Lincoln County (trailing, 43-37, with about two minutes to go in 12th Region) has a stud three-point artist named Carl-Lewis Cummins. I don't know how old he is, but say he's 16 and born in 1996 ...?

  10. Carl-Lewis Cummins and the Lincoln County Patriots fall to the Somerset Directions.
