Car horns, oddly both overused and underused. Overused for stuff like expressing antsyness with somebody not moving quickly enough from a light or trying to get someone to come out of a house. Underused for actually averting accidents.
On the UK message board, they're urging someone to put a new UK sticker on that street sign, because the one that's on there now is partially covered by another sticker.
What's really fascinating about the way American men dress is that it's almost impossible to tell how much money anyone has. I noticed this at the U.S. Open last year. You could be looking at some guy who makes $20,000 a year, or you could be looking at a millionaire who flew down with his buddies from Atlanta. In the standard uniform of baseball cap, tee-shirt, and knee-length shorts, they all look the same.
OK, a lot more activity now. I don't understand this. I like a lot of activity in the morning and then a big early-afternoon nap before getting back into the game for the evening. Between 1 and 2:30 p.m. is a daily struggle with despair for me.

Oh, no. A lot of us like to sleep until around 11 A.M. or so, poke around the hotel for awhile, get some lunch about 1 P.M., and then head out to the street.
For me, despair is a morning thing. Which is why I like to sleep in.
I'd totally forgotten how the beer guys push their dollies right down the streets in the French Quarter. It makes sense, given how many people there are on the sidewalks.
I can just picture all of the KU fans still working away in the suburbs of Kansas City. "Well, yes, we will be heading to the game, but we really have to make sure those end-of-the-quarter reports get turned in to corporate."
I'm one of those dweebs. When I was writing about women's hoops for a Web magazine on the side of my office job, I was forever doing office work on press row during timeouts and halftime, conducting biz as though I was still back in my Herndon, Va, office-park cube.
The one time I really tried to blow off work to go do something fun (I'm talking about abject blowing it off in the realm of, OK, I know I promised to get this in to this guy by 6 p.m., but it's a Friday and he won't look for it until Monday morning), it was to go to a John Prine concert with a friend in Chattanooga. I got out of the concert (fantastic, as always for John Prine), and I had this angry voice message from the guy. I ended up staying up in the Holiday Inn room or whatever until 4 or 5 Saturday morning after the concert, getting the work thing done for him to review over the weekend. Still gives me shivers when I think about it.
It's hilarious how many of the Kentucky fans know about the camera and know exactly where it is. Every so often a group of them will stand in front of the camera and wave.

I honestly haven't seen anything, and I'm not just counting blues for Kentucky. In fact, it has to be clearly Kentucky for me to count them. The reds of Louisville and Ohio State, I'm looser with.

I actually think I might've just seen a guy I went to church with in Raleigh. He's a JAG in Florida now, and he was a huge North Carolina State guy. But it would be totally like him to show up for this weekend. I will reach out to him to check.

ReplyDeleteI may just watch this New Orleans web cam all through the Kansas-Ohio State game.
ReplyDeleteThis saxophone solo that we're getting makes me want to watch Saint Elmo's Fire again.

DeleteAs far as I can tell, here are the requirements for every middle-aged man in New Orleans today:
ReplyDelete1. baseball cap
2. tee-shirt
3. knee-length shorts
4. sneakers with no socks

If you watch the web cam while listening to Bluegrass music, the whole scene appears to be amazingly festive.
