Boys' Sweet Sixteen: Evening Session

The biggest game of the first round is tonight: Bullitt East (with UK signee Derek Willis) is taking on Trinity, the number one in the Commonwealth. Whoever wins this game will become the favorite to win the tournament.

The second game is Apollo v. Clark County -- which should be a pretty easy win for Clark County.

  1. With 4:59 left in the second quarter, Bullitt East leads Trinity 13-8. The BEHS zone is giving Trinity problems; the Shamrocks have shot 4-17 so far.

  2. Now Trinity's press is causing problems for BEHS. We're all tied at 14 with 2:36 left before halftime.

By the way, every game played in the tournament today has featured very poor shooting, and this game is no exception.

  3. 16-all at the half. Not exactly the high-powered shootout we were expecting.

  4. Well, we will hope that Derek Willis doesn't always play like this once he joins UK. He has 10 rebounds, but is 1-10(!) from the field, and BEHS now trails Trinity 22-19 with 4:28 left in the 3d quarter.

  5. Well, Derek Willis has continued to struggle (he's 3-15 from the field), and the Shamrocks are cruising. Trinity's up 47-30 with 2:39 left. More evidence that the state championship was decided in the Round of 64 when Trinity beat Ballard.

  6. Final score: Trinity 52, Bullitt East 32.

What an absolutely humiliating defeat for Bullitt East, who went to the State Semi-Finals last year.

Derek Willis finishes with 13 rebounds but only 8 points, as he goes 3-15 from the field.
