Close your eyes, now think of 60's rock. From the Beatles to Jefferson Airplane let all of the sounds of the sixties flow over your consciousness. Now try and construct an album that incorporates the entire decade into 12 tracks. That is essentially what Matthew Sweet has done with Modern Art.
Sweet is able to accomplish what he wants, but it does come at a cost. The cost is he abandons hooks and melodies for creating this odd mash of 60's sound that runs through every song. On a few songs, like "Baltimore" he's able to pull out of the 60's mire, but that song sounds more 70's power pop than 60's mash up and so in a way it doesn't fit with the rest of the album.
If you want to fall back to the 60's then give this a listen. It's an interesting and you may find that it resonates with you, it did not with me.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
What a curious idea coming from a guy who knows how to create hooks and melodies.
