Album Review: Metals by Feist

In 2007 with The Reminder Feist hit it big. Her music had enough of a pop twist to hit to make a couple of big hits for her and suddenly she went form being the darling of the indie scene to the scorn of the indie scene. I always thought she got a raw deal on that score and wonder if that's why she let four years laps before her next album.

There are two things that make Feist a unique artist and they are completely intertwined. Her song structure is, or was before a lot of imitators came along, very unique. She constructs very complex little songs that turn and twist with the emotions of the lyrics and her voice and make for at times a difficult listen until you adjust to it. She is able to pull this off as well as she does because Feist has a true gift for singing. A unique voice and an obvious talent. With her voice she can guide the listener through her oddly arranged songs and bring out ever edge, every minor note, every single twist with an ease that smooths out the entire experience.

With Metals she seems to have moved into a quieter darker place. With her sharp edged songs this quieter place seems perfect for the winter.

I have given Feist a lot of praise and so you may wonder at my rating for this album, but here's the thing I'm not a very big Feist fan. My wife is and so I would imagine she will really enjoy this album given a chance to hear it as it draws upon all the things the make Feist unique and good.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
