One of the great things about art is that the artist can grow and change over time if they so choose. Opeth has been around since the mid 90's and were at the heart of the Swedish Death Metal scene. The Swedish Death Metal scene is or was at least a big deal. But even back in 2001 when they came out with their Death Metal classic Blackwater Park there were signs of where they were going. The signs were always there with these guys who love to go on musical explorations on their albums and especially in concert.
With Heritage they have essentially left Death Metal behind and moved fully into progressive rock. I would say think Dire Straits as a progressive rock band and you have a good sense of the sound of this album. If you are a big fan of 70's progressive rock then you won't want to miss this album. If you're like me and you can take or leave progressive rock, well this is probably the best modern example I've heard in a long time.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
i like prog rock a whole lot more than i ever thought i did.
