OK, here we go (regional tournaments listed in order of how the winners will be bracketed in the 2012 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen® State Basketball Tournament):
Fourth Region, at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green--Bowling Green beat Monroe County, 47-45, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional tournament, and both are rated among the state's top 25 in the latest Lexington Herald-Leader's Cantrall rankings (as well as the last top 20 in The Courier-Journal's final Litkenhous Ratings of the season, which came out before the district tournaments). Bowling Green is 13th in the Cantrall ratings; Monroe, 15th. Monroe won at Bowling Green, 52-34, on Jan. 9. No. 20 Glasgow is another contender in the Fourth Region.
Sixth Region, at Atherton High School and Bellarmine University's Knights Hall in Louisville--Louisville Butler beat Bullitt East, 40-39, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional, but so is Louisville Mercy, last year's Seventh Region runnerup and the state's fourth-rated team in the last Cantralls. Butler is 23rd.
Ninth Region, at Northern Kentucky University's Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights--Newport Central Catholic beat Boone County, 50-40, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional--and, in fact, play each other in tonight's second quarterfinal. This is the game of the night in the state; the last Litkenhous had Boone fifth in the state and NewCath 18th. The teams' regular-season meeting, Dec. 16 at NewCath, went 50-47 in favor of Boone. This is a powerhouse region; Union Larry A. Ryle, which upset Boone in their district championship, and Park Hills Notre Dame were seventh and eighth in the state in the final C-J rankings, and they each play in Ninth Region quarterfinals Tuesday night.
11th Region, at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum in Richmond--Richmond Madison Central beat Scott County, 85-72, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional. Madison Central, ranked 12th in the latest Cantralls, plays No. 26 Lexington Catholic in a quarterfinal tomorrow. The top Cantraller in the 11th, though, is No. 11 Paul Laurence Dunbar, which lost to Madison Central but won two of its three games this season against Lexington Catholic (including a 71-46 obliteration in the 43rd District championship).
Seventh Region, at Bellarmine's Knights Hall--Louisville DuPont Manual beat Louisville Mercy, 55-52, for the 2011 regional championship and went on to finish runnerup in the Sweet Sixteen. Manual is back in this year's regional, and it is the state's top team in both the last Litkenhous and Cantralls. Mercy, one of only two teams to beat Manual this season, is now in the Sixth Region, which leaves Louisville Sacred Heart, No. 14 in the Cantralls, and Louisville Christian, No. 24, as the top Seventh Region upset hopes.
14th Region, at Breathitt County High School in Jackson--Perry County Central beat Leslie County, 78-58, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional, and Perry is third in the state in the LHL Cantralls.
Third Region, at Owensboro Sportcenter--Owensboro Catholic beat Grayson County, 64-50, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional--and play one another in tonight's second quarterfinal. Grayson won, 76-67, at Owensboro Catholic on Jan. 7, and it is the Third Region's highest-rated team in the Cantralls.
10th Region, at Campbell County Middle School in Alexandria--Montgomery County beat Winchester George Rogers Clark, 58-51, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional. Montgomery is the region's top-rated team in the Cantralls, and its opponent in tomorrow night's quarterfinal, Alexandria Bishop Brossart, is second. Montgomery won the regular-season meeting of the two teams, 52-42 on Feb. 10.
Second Region, at Christian County High School in Hopkinsville--Crittenden County beat Christian County, 53-49, for the 2011 regional championship. Neither team is in this year's regional. This leaves Henderson County, No. 20 in the last Litkenhous and Hopkinsville, No. 25 in the new Cantralls, as the new favorites. Those two teams did not play in the regular season. Livingston Central has (at least) a dangerous scorer.
First Region, at Murray State University's CFSB Center--Calloway County beat Murray, 42-27, for the 2011 regional championship. Murray is back in this year's regional, with the First Region's all-time scorer (girls' or boys' hoops). But both Paducah Tilghman and Marshall County rated higher in the final Litkenhous. Tilghman beat Marshall twice this season; Marshall beat Murray twice, and Murray beat Tilghman in those two teams' one meeting.
Fifth Region, at Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown--Marion County beat Elizabethtown, 53-52, in the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional. Marion County, one of only two teams to beat No. 1 Louisville Manual this season, was second in both the new LHL Cantralls and the last C-J Litkenhous; Etown, 13th. Green County comes in at 18th.
Eighth Region, at Anderson County High School in Lawrenceburg--Walton-Verona beat Anderson County, 40-39, in the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional. Anderson is ninth in the Cantralls; Walton-Verona, 19th. No. 8 South Oldham, a 48-45 loser at home to Walton-Verona on Dec. 3 and a 63-62 winner at Anderson on Jan. 20, is also in the Eighth.
15th Region, at Pikeville's East Kentucky Expo Center--Inez Sheldon Clark beat Betsy Layne, 39-34, in the 2011 regional championship. Betsy Layne is back in this year's regional, but Shelby Valley is the region's top team in the Cantralls.
16th Region, semifinals and final at Morehead State University's Johnson Arena--Boyd County beat Ashland Blazer, 57-45, for the 2011 regional championship. Both teams are back in this year's regional, and Blazer is rated 16th in the state in the Cantralls. Blazer beat Boyd 61-58 on Dec. 3, 71-58 on Jan. 23 and 70-41 on Feb. 23 in the 64th District championship.
12th Region, at Lincoln County High School in Stanford--Rockcastle County beat Casey County, 62-44, for the 2011 regional championship and went on to win the state championship. Casey County is back in this year's regional, but six of the other seven regional-participants--Lincoln County, Mercer County, Danville, Wayne County, Somerset Southwestern and Pulaski County--are all ranked higher than Casey in the Cantralls. Good news for Casey: Tomorrow night's quarterfinal foe, Burgin, is not.
13th Region, at Corbin's The Arena--Clay County beat South Laurel, 40-30, for the 2011 regional championship and is back in this year's regional. It's 17th in the state in the Cantralls. Whitley County is 21st.
Finally, here are the all-time regional-tournament champs in attractive, printable and frame-able PDF form (mad props to the KHSAA).
Stunning 13th Region note from Les Dixon of Corbin's Times-Tribune: "Dating back to the 2005-06 season, Clay County is 102-2 against 13th Region competition and the Lady Tigers now possess a 58-game win streak against 13th Region teams."
ReplyDeleteThat all-time regional list is great. Go Heath Pirates of 1980!
ReplyDeleteDo they have something like that for the boys' tournament?
WATCH YOUR NEWSSTAND FOR TOMORROW'S HEATH POST!
ReplyDeleteFor the record the 1980 Lady Pirates beat Paris in the first round of the state tournament, 59-46. In the second round, they lost to Franklin County, 61-44. I remember that game well; they stopped school to play it over the intercom at Heath Middle.
ReplyDeleteBeing only 12 at the time, it felt to me like that 1980 Heath High varsity girls' team had gone to the Olympics.
ReplyDeleteEarly results ...
ReplyDeleteMercy and Manual seemed to be sending messages to each other across Louisville. Mercy crushed Bullitt Central, 82-49, at Atherton in the Sixth Region; Manual crushed Seneca, 89-41, at Bellarmine in the Seventh.
Tough night for the home team and favorite in the Eighth ... Anderson County falls behind big early, slips ahead a bit late but falls to Simon Kenton, 51-49 ...
ReplyDeleteA hot one in the 12th in Stanford: Mercer County 49, Southwestern 48.
ReplyDelete13th upset: North Laurel 57, Whitley County 55. The road to a fourth consecutive regional title appears to have just gotten a little easier for Clay County.
ReplyDeleteLone Oak 50, Graves County 40 in the First.
ReplyDeleteIn the game of the night, it's NewCath 24, Boone County 17 at the half at NKU in the Ninth Region.
ReplyDeleteSecond Region: Livingston Central 66, University Heights 58.
ReplyDeleteUpset brewing at the middle school in the 10th Region?
