HP SPECIAL REPORT: Rest in Peace, Robert M. Rennick
This is a Heath Post Special Report ... The Kentucky desk was apparently so eaten up with the Micah Johnson watch back in August 2010 that it missed the news of Robert M. Rennick's passing. I regret the oversight.
The 1987 paperback edition of Mr. Rennick's Kentucky Place Names was not only formative in my Kentucky-love infancy but also helpful, as I used the map on pages vi and vii to help me cut up the state into driveable-in-one-day chunks (as well as to jot down a message from Lonnie of Lindseyville, in Edmonson County).
Twenty-five years later, I still hardly go more than six or eight days without reading and enjoying at least one paragraph in Kentucky Place Names. To me, that qualifies it as a heck of a good and important book (5 stars, highly recommended), and I am not alone in my high regard for Mr. Rennick's work.
I'm so thankful that this Brooklynite was so taken with Kentucky and that his spouse was so supportive of his passions. There's no greater fortune in this world than to find a spouse who is supportive of one's passions and/or to find a spouse whose passions one can genuinely support. Praise God that Mr. and Mrs. Rennick found each other, and happy Valentine's Day next week, R.

I also have a cherished copy of this book. We are very lucky that someone took the time to do such a good job with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I really like the cover.
ReplyDeleteExcellent point about the cover. It looks like a high-school yearbook from about 1979.
