A few years ago, the Kentucky athletic department started promoting its women's basketball team under the name "UK Hoops." I have to admit that I thought this was silly, but in recent years UK Hoops has just gotten better and better. Today, after a crushing 76-40 win at Mississippi State, the UK women have captured their first SEC title since 1982. What a great, great job by Coach Matthew Mitchell, who rallied the Lady Cats after a three-game losing streak earlier this month. Now Kentucky fans have TWO SEC tournaments to invade. Here are the final standings for this season:
Kentucky: 13-3, 24-5
Tennessee: 12-4, 21-8
Georgia: 11-5, 22-7
LSU: 10-6, 20-9
Arkansas: 10-6, 21-7
S. Carolina: 10-6, 21-8
Vanderbilt: 9-7, 21-8
Florida: 8-8, 18-11
Auburn: 5-11, 13-16
Mississippi St: 4-12, 14-15
Alabama: 2-14, 12-18
Ole Miss: 2-14, 12-17
The SEC Women's Tournament tips off at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Thursday, March 1. UK's first game will be Friday at 1 EST. The Cats will take on the winner of a game between Auburn and Florida.
