Hat-tip to Eric for this information:
After a disastrous 5-11 start to the season, Western Kentucky has fired men's basketball coach Ken McDonald. Assistant Coach Ray Harper, who won Division II national championships at Kentucky Wesleyan in 1999 and 2001, has been named as the interim head coach.
I think this move will be very popular with Tops fans, many of whom had been clamoring for Harper to be given a shot at the head job.
Western now immediately becomes a very interesting story. Anyone who saw them play U of L know that the Toppers have a lot of athleticism. Now they have a new coach who enjoyed spectacular success in D-II. And five of their next seven games are against teams who Pomeroy ranks in the 200's. If Western could get on a roll, their season could change very quickly.
Right now, Pomeroy has Western ranked number 267 in the country. I am eager to see how that ranking changes over the next few weeks. And whatever happens, at least we know that Western has finally turned the page on a painful era in its proud basketball history.
