MURRAY WINS IN ROWAN COUNTY!
MURRAY STATE 66, MOREHEAD STATE 60!
19-0!! The streak lives!!
I've been worried about this game for some time. Here are the results of Murray's last three trips to Morehead:
12/04/10: Morehead St. 75 - 65 Murray St.
02/25/10: Morehead St. 70 - 65 Murray St.
12/06/08: Morehead St. 79 - 74 Murray St.
Morehead State is well-coached (just ask Louisville, who lost to them in the NCAA's last year), they have experience in big games, they have a good history against Murray, and they would be playing at home. Meanwhile, the Racers are still without injured forward Ivan Aska, and they are clearly laboring under the weight of their streak -- as shown by their difficulties with Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
Sure enough, Murray's good shooting touch abandoned it in this game. The Racers went 5-18 from behind the three-point line, and made only 23 of 34 free throws. The Racers were down 37-31 at the half, and were down 46-37 with 13 minutes left. But the never-say-die Racers pulled it together and won their 19th straight game. Isaiah Canaan poured in 22 points, and Donte Poole chipped in another 15, mainly thanks to 8-10 shooting from the line. The Racers outscored the Eagles 29-14 down the stretch to remain undefeated.
I'm sure the Morehead fans are screaming about the officiating -- Murray had 34 free throws to only 22 for Morehead, and Morehead's two leading scorers fouled out. I didn't see the game live, so I have no idea whether there is an issue here or not. I'm just very glad that Murray has survived, and I really hope they get their shooting touch back soon.
Next up: On Saturday, the Racers travel to SIU Edwardsville as they shoot for their 20th win in a row.
Hooray for Murray!
