OK, to close the loop on Eric's great coverage, here are your 2011 State Champs (private schools in italics):
Class 1A:
Hazard 24, Mayfield 6
I thought this was the single biggest surprise of the year.
Class 2A:
Cov. Holy Cross 33, Glasgow 14
Northern Kentucky is very tough to beat in this class.
Class 3A:
Lou. Central 15, Belfry 14
This was closer than I expected. Great job by the mountain schools this year.
Class 4A:
Ft. Thomas Highlands 42, Franklin-Simpson 14
Warren Central beat Franklin-Simpson 34-6 back in August, and Bowling Green blew out Warren Central twice. So my guess is that BGHS would have beaten Highlands handily if they were still in 5A.
Class 5A:
Bowling Green 55, Anderson Co. 3
Bowling Green beat St. X 28-20, and Trinity was the only other Kentucky school to beat St. X all year. So there is a good argument to be made the BGHS was actually the second-best team in the Commonwealth this year.
Class 6A:
Lou. Trinity 62, Scott Co. 21
We look forward to seeing Central, Highlands, and Trinity back on top of the trophy stand next year.
We have complained about the class system this season, and my guess is that we will complain about it next season and for many seasons to come. But we also have our own awards to give out which do not depend on the class system. Here they are:
Best Team in the Commonwealth:
Louisville Trinity
Coach Rodney Bushong Trophy (for the Best Team in the Jackson Purchase):
Mayfield
Al Baker Trophy (for the Best Team between Louisville and the Purchase):
Bowling Green
Paul Hornung Trophy (for the Best Team in Jefferson County):
Louisville Trinity (duh!)
Jim Bunning Trophy (for the Best Team in Northern Kentucky):
Ft. Thomas Highlands
Coach Blanton Collier Trophy (for the Best Team in the Bluegrass):
Scott Co.
Tim Couch Trophy (for the Best Team in the mountains):
Belfry (This was close, but Belfry beat Breathitt Co. 28-14, and Hazard lost to Breathitt Co. 35-34. So I'm going with Belfry).
And once again, the Certificate for Team that Should Be Forced to Move Up to a Higher Level of Competition goes to both Louisville Central and Fort Thomas Highlands. Congrats, guys!
Per the Couch, The Hazard Herald: "(T)he Bulldogs’ win illustrates that the wealth of Kentucky’s talent in sports and beyond should not be measured exclusively from the central, more populated part of the state. Of course, we’ve always known that, especially here in Hazard and Perry County where for multiple generations we’ve turned out some of the Commonwealth’s best and brightest in sports, the arts and professionals in every field imaginable. Our neighbors here in the eastern part of the Commonwealth can and should make similar claims. More often than not it seems that Eastern Kentucky, while a part of the Commonwealth, is an isolated region in terms of identity. But that’s okay. We hillbillies have been dealing with it for some time now. ..."
