For the first time in two weeks, UK won a basketball game, and I'm pretty happy about that. Some people are always complaining that UK plays too many cupcakes, but I enjoy games like this. Kentucky jumped out 16-2 to open the game and was never seriously threatened afterward, and personally I would take a whole season of similar games.
The big story from this game will be that Terrence Jones, who had a dreadful game against Indiana, played only 10 minutes in this game because of a dislocated little finger. There's a great deal of angst about Jones on the UK message board, and I can see why. But like I said after the IU game, this is the sort of thing that Coach Cal gets paid to deal with. He'll either figure it out or he won't, but I don't think anyone could do a much better job than he will.
As for the rest of the team, I thought they took too many three's tonight. They were 12-33 from behind the arc, which is really weird considering that they were only 2-7 against Indiana. I do think the Cats need to get better at three-point shooting, and it would be great to think that they could pull off a 10-21 type game in the NCAA's if they really had to. But I just don't have a good feeling about any of the three-point shooters except for Lamb, and I wish they had worked some more on getting the ball inside.
It was nice to see a team miss three's against UK for once. The Moccasins were 8-27 from three-point range, which means that they missed more three's tonight than UNC and IU missed in two games against us. But I still thought they were getting a lot of open looks.
So, on the whole, an easy win against a poor team, but a number of issues for Cal to worry about while the rest of us are thinking about Christmas.
