Album Review: Slave Ambient by The War on Drugs

Think Tom Petty meets My Bloody Valentine and you pretty much have the sound of this album.  It's an odd sound and I can't believe I have made Tom Petty references on two straight reviews.

I think the guys accomplish what they are trying to do, which is marry roots rock to the late 80's sound of bands like My Bloody Valentine, but I'm not sure I like the results.

The musical interludes could be dropped and nothing would be missed, in fact they tend to detract from the album.  With those out of the way it's a solid set of songs that bring these two sounds together quite well.  For me though it's not a sound that holds much interest for me.  I'm usually either in the mood for Tom Petty or the mood for My Bloody Valentine, and to my ears they don't mix very well.

Still if you like either Tom Petty or My Bloody Valentine you should give this album a listen and see what you think.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. I find the first 32 seconds of this song to be highly compelling. There's a little World Party in here.
