Album Review: Hell On Heels by Pistol Annies

A female country super group made up of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley the Pistol Annies have put together a solid collection of down and out bitter women songs.  It's a fun collection of songs and they went with a fairly straightforward sound which works well since these are three solid singers who each have their turns at the mike.

The biggest problem these guys run into is that others have done this kind of stuff much better in the past.  It's hard for me to listen to this album and not think about Loretta Lynn or Freakwater and it always hurts an album when you find yourself wanting to pick up a different album in its place.

Still it's a fun collection of songs and so if you're in the mood for these types of songs I would say give it a listen.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. I see that Freakwater's Wikipedia entry says they are a Chicago outfit. This puzzles me.

  2. Yeah I've run across this as well. I remember one of their albums was picked by Amazon as country album of the year when it came out, and at that time Freakwater had made Chicago their home base. I'm not sure how long they had been there, but I noted that I always see them referred to as a Chicago based band.
