This week -- the first week of the playoffs -- is always given over to eliminating teams that wouldn't have made the playoffs when I was a kid. Here's what's happening tomorrow night in western Kentucky (home teams listed first):
Class 1A Playoffs:
Mayfield (10-0) v. Caverna (1-9)
Kentucky Country Day (8-2) v. Fulton Co. (2-8)
Lou. Holy Cross (9-1) v. Fulton City (1-9)
Russellville (5-5) v. Bethlehem (2-8)
Class 2A Playoffs:
Murray (9-1) v. Union Co. (5-5)
Hancock Co. (6-4) v. Crittenden Co. (3-7)
Owensboro Catholic (10-0) v. Reidland (3-7)
Caldwell Co. (5-5) v. Butler Co. (7-3)
Class 3A Playoffs:
Paducah Tilghman (8-2) v. Hart Co. (6-4)
Monroe Co. (5-5) v. Trigg Co. (7-3)
Edmonson Co. (10-0) v. Heath (3-7)
Fort Campbell (6-4) v. South Warren (4-6)
Class 4A Playoffs:
Lone Oak (8-2) v. Breckinridge Co. (1-9)
Warren East (7-3) v. Owensboro (4-6)
Madisonville-North Hopkins (8-2) v. Allen County-Scottsville (4-6)
Franklin-Simpson (9-1) v. Calloway Co. (3-7)
Class 5A Playoffs:
Christian Co. (9-1) v. Barren Co. (5-5)
Warren Cent. (9-1) v. Graves Co. (4-6)
Ohio Co. (9-1) v. Greenwood (5-5)
Bowling Green (10-0) v. Owensboro Apollo (2-8)
Class 6A Playoffs:
Henderson Co. (7-3) v. Lou. Southern (4-6)
Lou. Pleasure Ridge Park (8-2) v. Daviess Co. (3-7)
Marshall Co. (6-4) v. Lou. Seneca (2-8)
Lou. Butler (8-2) v. Muhlenberg Co. (0-10)
More from the Class A tournament:
ReplyDelete-- They should've just canceled all classes in Fulton County and declared it a football holiday. The Fulton County Pilots visit Louisville Kentucky Country Day, and the Fulton Independent Bulldogs visit Louisville Holy Cross.
-- Corbin Lynn Camp at Hazard. Les Dixon's Times-Tribune story includes some pretty grim quotes from the visiting Wildcats' coach of 34 years, David Mitchell.
-- Paris at Beechwood. The whole two-hour bus ride up U.S. 27, the Paris coach ought to show a videotape of the 1984 Class A championship to get his boys fired up for revenge.
Forgot to include the link on the 1984 Class A championship: Beechwood 35, Paris 26.
ReplyDeleteClass 2A:
ReplyDelete-- Paducah Sun sports editor (and former Lone Oak Purple Flash academic-team stalwart) Joey Fosko foresees mostly blowouts in western Kentucky but writes that Crittenden County at Hancock County, Butler County at Caldwell County and Union County at Murray are "intriguing."
-- Middlesboro at Leslie County. The visitors have won seven straight against the homies.
-- Betsy Layne at Somerset. The visiting Bobcats lost all three of their district games but finished 7-3. Also, Somerset's nickname is "Briar Jumpers." We should never miss the opportunity to note this.
Class 3A:
ReplyDelete-- I imagine all of Brownsville is pretty hot for revenge today, given that Edmonson County was one of Heath's victims in the Pirates' glorious march to the 1986 Class A championship. One of the backs for the modern-day Wildcats is the grandson of our across-the-street neighbors, so I am prepared to flash icy glares across Madisonville's Bayview Drive all day long. ALL DAY LONG, BABY!
-- Bowling Green South Warren at Fort Campbell. First-ever playoff game for the visiting Spartans, who have won three straight.
-- Wayne County at LaRue County. The 8-2 visiting team's losses are to Bell County and Corbin, which are both ranked.
Class 4A:
ReplyDelete-- Owensboro at Bowling Green Warren East. The home-standing Raiders, after reaching the Class 4A semifinals in 2007, totaled seven victories over the next three seasons.
-- Fort Thomas Highlands at Boyd County. I am pretty sure I have literally never seen statistics like this (even counting the NCFA Burlington Bees). The Highlands quarterback (and Jim Bunning's grandson), Patrick Towles, has thrown 186 passes this season, averaged 276 yards per game and thrown for 36 touchdowns for the state's highest-scoring offense. He has one interception.
Class 5A:
ReplyDelete-- Graves County at Bowling Green Warren Central. This game pits the home coach against his former team.
-- Montgomery County at Union Randall K. Cooper. Cooper hadn't won a district game in its first three years of existence, but, bumped to Class 5A, it's suddenly a district champ.
-- Crestwood South Oldham at Anderson County. Courier-Journal schoolboy-football scribe (and ex-Week subscriber) Jason Frakes reports on the rematch of a 2010 playoff game that Anderson County won by answering South Oldham's 27 third-quarter points with 28 of their own in the fourth.
-- London South Laurel and Perry County Central. The home team's eight wins so far is a school record Perry County Central is coached by a former WKU quarterback, Justin Haddix.
And here's the bracket of teams vying for the last Class 6A title before the McCracken County Mustangs are in play.
ReplyDeleteWell, it is, indeed, mostly a Friday night of blowouts ...
