This Week's Games (continued)

Sorry if this continuation of GoHeath's fine preview ends abruptly, but the 2-year-old and I are headed out to hike and look for turkeys as soon as she wakes up.

Class A

Fort Mitchell Beechwood at Mayfield. The old foes meet again at War Memorial Stadium, whose opening night back in 1949 saw "one of few drop-kicks in the history of the West Kentucky Conference.."

Pikeville at Hazard. Here are two familiar supporting-cast members in recent Class A scripts. Hazard's Daniel Field, by the way, looks like a great place to go watch a game.

Class 2A

Glasgow at Murray. Happy Thanksgiving for the Scotties, finally. And now they have a perfectly sunny Friday for a fantastic four-hour drive across southwestern Kentucky over to Ty Holland Stadium in downtown Murray.

Somerset at Covington Holy Cross. The red-and-black Indians play their home games at Holmes High School's Thomas Ellis Field, built on a former lake bed near a castle were entertainment "was lavish," wrote Betty Lee Nordheim in 2002's Echoes of the Past, A History of the Covington Public School System. "Many formal parties were given, and famous people attended. Alice Roosevelt, daughter of the president, was a dinner guest in 1905 and may have met her husband-to-be, Nicholas Longworth, there at Holmesdale."

Class 3A

Louisville Central at Fort Campbell. My favorite item at the "unofficial fan store of your Fort Campbell Falcons" is the "Peace, Love & Hate Trigg County" T-shirt.

Belfry at Garrard County. The Golden Lions' fight song is sung to the "Washington and Lee Swing:"

Oh, when old Garrard High School falls in line
We're gonna win this game another time,
For the high school that we love so well,
And for the football team we'll yell, and yell, and yell,
We're gonna fight, fight, fight for every score,
We're gonna win and then we'll win some more
We're gonna roll old Belfry on the sod, on the sod,
Rah, Rah, Rah,
G-A-R-R-A-R-D
GARRARD, GARRARD, GARRARD!!!!

Class 4A

Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins at Franklin-Simpson. Per the Nov. 21 FSHS announcements: "Football Tickets!!! Tickets are on sale in the office for Friday night’s game. They are $5.00 in advance and will be $7.00 at the game. Blue cards and season passes will NOT be accepted." In other news: "Your Catflash staff is currently accepting submissions of student art work and poetry as well as pictures of students in FSHS gear and questions for our advice column. Submissions can be made direction to any newspaper staff member, to Mrs. Hall or online via the 'I WANT TO BE IN THE FRANKLIN SIMPSON HIGH SCHOOL CATFLASH' facebook group." Maybe we need an "I WANT TO BE IN THE HEATH POST" facebook group.

Fort Thomas Highlands at Lexington Catholic. Interestingly, tickets for tonight's game at Joseph K. Stadium in Lexington are $6--$1 more than the advance tickets but $1 less than the gate price down in Franklin.

Class 5A

Elizabethtown John Hardin at Bowling Green. This week's Elizabethtown News-Enterprise headlines don't leave much gap for John Hardin optimism: "Bulldogs brace for Bowling Green's offense." "Bowling Green defense has been superb."

Somerset Pulaski Southwestern at Anderson County. Hate it that fun John Herndon is stuck behind The Anderson News paywall. Here's the start of his column that peaks out in the newspaper's Nov. 23 email digest: "Black Friday? I don’t think so. How about Red Friday? Anderson County Bearcat Red, that is. And forget about Occupying Wall Street or any other place other than Warford Stadium on Friday night, 7:30. There is still some high school football to be played in Lawrenceburg. The Bearcats will be hosting Southwestern, from Pulaski County, the state Class 5A semi-finals. Read that again. The Bearcats are just one win away from the state championship game. ..."

Class 6A

Louisville Trinity at Louisville Butler Traditional.

Boone County at Scott County. Rivalry renewed, after all.

Wow, the little girl is really zonked out. It's now 8:45. We had my family's Thanksgiving yesterday and my wife's today; plus, it's game day.

  22. Thanks! Getting ready to resume coverage during WYMC's morning-after show, from the Mayfield McDonald's!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, that was the plan when Vince Dawson and David Morris were signing off last night's broadcast--8 a.m. live remote from McDonald's; I've got it being 8:01, though, and WYMC.com is playing the Righteous Brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. By the way, WYMC of Mayfield interlaces its Righteous Brothers hits with CNN Radio news; Oldies1480.com out of Cadiz goes with Fox News Radio.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Once we do finally cut over to McDonald's, I hope the whole show is devoted to discussing the history of the dropkick in the West Kentucky Conference. I'm pretty sure the great Centre College "Praying Colonels" had a drop-kick specialist from Mayfield High.

"Coaches Corner" is now starting on WYMC, so maybe we'll get some clarity on this question.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hoarse Vince Dawson's first words over the murmur of Egg McMuffiners: "Wow. What a game."

The coach and the star running back got standing ovations when they walked in McDonald's this morning, Dawson reports.

    ReplyDelete
  27. One of the sponsors of WYMC's "Coaches Corner" show is The Apothecary "on the Cuba Road."

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mayfield coach Joe Morris just mentioned how excited he was to see that Franklin-Simpson survived Shelybville Martha Layne Collins in one of last night's 4A semis. Schlosser is a Mayfield native, and Morris says he and his brothers and Schlosser and his brothers grew up playing backyard football with one another.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In Friday's 11 a.m. Central Class A championship against Hazard, Mayfield will be seeking its 30th consecutive victory.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Coach Morris just spent five minutes thanking the providers of the Cardinals' pre-game meals throughout the season. Both he and the host forgot to bring their lists of those donors, but Coach Morris recalled off the top of his head about seven of them--Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, a local steakhouse and last night's providers, "Larry, Darryl and Darrell."

  31. It's a sad morning in Garrard County, where the Golden Lions were outlasted at home by Belfry and, so, the championship remains "in progress."

That Garrard County football web site is a lot of fun. According to the history Word doc that's linked through there, Garrard County's all-time record through 2006 was 226-222-4. It had never won a state championship.

The team started playing in 1964, but, until 1989, only one of the seven head coaches in program history had compiled a winning record: Coy Dyehouse, 20-10-1, from 1966-68. The 1967 team was the only playoff qualifier over the same period, losing at home in Lancaster, 26-20, to Bardstown. Last night's game was played at Dyehouse Memorial Stadium in Lancaster, so I'm guessing it was named after the late Coach Coy.

In 1989, Coach Gwen Gaddie led the Golden Lions to a 6-4 mark. It was his only season at the helm.

Then commenced Jerry Perry's seven seasons as head coach. Given Garrard County's all-time record through 2006, it's amazing that Coach Perry's teams went 65-18 from 1990 through '96. This period also saw the Golden Lions' first playoff victories: one each in 1991, '94 and '96, two each in '93 and '95.

Undefeated through 10 regular-season games, the 1993 team crushed Green County, 50-0, and Campbellsville, 49-12, and then faced a rematch of its 1967 playoff game with Bardstown. Bardstown won at home, 14-13, and that surely had to be a hard drive home to Lancaster that late Friday night in 1993.

Two seasons later, Garrard County is back in the playoffs after an 8-2 regular season. The Golden Lions again opened the postseason by pounding Green County, 43-0, and then faced another trip to dreaded Bardstown. This time, the Golden Lions prevailed, 18-6, and, surely, this must have been a fantastic drive home to Lancaster that Friday night in 1995. Harrodsburg eliminated Garrard County, 14-6, the following week.

Jerry Perry's last season as head coach was an 8-4 campaign in 1996 that ended with a loss to Bardstown, 40-12, in the second round of the playoffs.

Two things: I wonder what happened to Jerry Perry, and they must hate Bardstown in Lancaster.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Now we're on to "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" on WYMC.

    ReplyDelete
  33. After Coach Jerry's last season, there's a decline for Garrard County: 2-8 in 1997, 3-7 in '98, 7-5 in '99 and then 2-8 again in 2000. Steve Stonebraker takes over as head coach in 2001 and puts together some fine seasons: 7-4 in 2001, 9-3 in both 2003 and 2004.

2005 must've been an awful autumn around football in Lancaster. Not only did the Golden Lions slide to a 3-8 record, there was the "Death of Jonathan McCullough," which Coach Stonebraker wrote about on his blog:
"Without a doubt this is the toughest situation I have ever dealt with as a head coach. When Jonny passed, due to a car wreck in 2005 it left us all with a void. He was a great kid to be around and I loved watching him play. He was also a great teammate. It was difficult to get through the rest of that season as football seemed to be a whole lot less important as things were really put into perspective. The football part of things may have meant less, but the Bible Studies and time together with the team meant a whole lot more after this tragedy. ...

"Following the death of Jonathan McCullough our Bible Study sessions took on a whole new meaning. Football was put in perspective and our attention turned to more important things. Two days after Jonny’s passing we had an FCA Bible Study session that hit home more than ever before. The entire team was present and many accepted Christ on that day. We even had one assistant coach that would cone to accept Christ. I am sure for those players and coaches who had Christ in their lives before this tragedy it solidified their faith. I know it did for me. Losing Jonny was, by far, the worst thing that has ever happened to me as a coach. The good that came in the days following the tragedy can be considered the best."

Garrard County went 2-8 in 2006 and 5-7 in 2007. That was Steve Stonebraker's last season as head coach of the Golden Lions.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So then Mark Scenters becomes head coach at Garrard County in 2008, and here are the records since then:

    4-7 in 2008,
    5-7 in '09,
    5-7 in '10 and
    12-2 this season.

The only losses in Coach Scenters's fourth fall were by eight at Danville in the season's second Friday, Aug. 27, and by seven last night at home, heartbreakingly, in the semifinals against Belfry (in a pretty vivid and excellent uniforms clash).

    "@SportsWind
"I never would've thought Garrard County was as good as they were this season. I mean they only beat a 1-9 Clay County team by 2. ...

    "@Cody_75
"Garrard fell 34-27 to Belfry but GC shocked the state, great season men, you gave them a run for their money #GLN

"Heart goes along way, and Garrard showed that tonight.

  37. Oh, baby ... "Neither One of Us Wants To Be the First To Say Goodbye," Gladys Knight & the Pips ... so excellent, so heartbreaking ... WYMC knows how to take it down a notch the morning after a big win.
