Band boosters are going to be making some mad hay on sales of Styrofoam cups of coffee at this evening's round-of-eight games in the Kentucky high school football playoffs. It's going to be a chilly night for game day ... low 40s forecasted from Mayfield to Louisville, low 30s down in Somerset and 23 out east in old Westwood.
Continuing GoHeath's preview ...
Class 6A
Louisville Butler at Henderson County. @D_Train55 of Butler Tweets: "I will not lose to Henderson county." @Chosen_One_7 adds: "And after we upset Henderson County I want TRINITY next."
Louisville Saint Xavier vs. Louisville Trinity at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. It's been fun following the Twitter smack this week. For example, Tennessee Titans kicker @RobBironas, a Trinity boy, predicts, "It cld get ugly! rocks #WIN big 52-17."
Scott County at Middletown Eastern. Scott Brown (@scottbrown) with WKDZ of Cadiz, meanwhile, was dropping all kinds of KHSAA football knowledge this week, including the fact that Eastern is the only surviving 6A team that has never won a regional title.
Boone County at Lexington Lafayette. Eliciting good quotes is a skill. So is knowing which quotes actually are good ones that accurately illustrate the true tenor of the story. Mike Fields of Lexington's Herald-Leader has both of these skills. "Some people have lost faith in football in Fayette County."
Class 5A
Warren Central at Bowling Green. Purples coach Kevin Wallace, @kwallacebg, getting psyched this morning: "In 16 hours, only four will remain."
Jeffersontown at Elizabethtown John Hardin. The home team's quarterback is a big Craig Krenzel fan.
Anderson County at Hebron Connor. In beating Franklin County, 84-48, last Friday, Connor's football team scored more points than did either of the school's basketball teams in a game last season.
Harlan County at Somerset Pulaski Southwestern. The home team has been on an eight-game win streak since an abrupt, still-mysterious coaching change.
Class 4A
Franklin-Simpson at Lone Oak. The Wildcats' defensive coordinator is a former Western Kentucky University head coach.
Louisville Western at Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins. A few more things about Collins ... it's actually "Martha Layne Collins Hill High School;" Martha Layne Collins is a grad of old Shelbyville High, and the new school includes grades 8 through 12.
Boyle County at Lexington Catholic. Will Begley, principal at Boyle County (@BigRebelNation): "Let's turn this into a home game! Hit me back if you are going! Bring a friend! Get out and support your REBELS! #PackTheHouse." Kyle Bolin, quarterback at Lexington Catholic (@KyleBolin14): "Boyle County @ Lexington Catholic This Friday! Kickoff at 7:30. Going to be a great game, everybody needs to come out! Pack the house!."
Covington Catholic at Fort Thomas Highlands. Get there early.
Class 3A
Fort Campbell at Paducah Tilghman. The Blue Tornadoes won, 31-7, won when these two teams met Sept. 30. Since that game, Fort Campbell has won five straight--all by shutout.
Bell County at Louisville Central. Fired up on Log Mountain ... "It's the greatest game on Earth, guys." ... "Bell Football always gts shafted on recognition!!!" ... "It's a Bell County thing."
Powell County at Garrard County. I plan to tune in for at least some of this game, as both teams are amid historic seasons for their programs. Either WKDZ or Oldies1480.com will likely have Fort Campbell-Tilghman, so I'll check out that one, too. And then there will be the Mayfield-Louisville Holy Cross game, on WYMC. Meanwhile, Bowling Green-Warren Central is part of the ihigh.com slate of scheduled broadcasts.
Breathitt County at Belfry. MacKenzie Bates with WYMT of Hazard (@mbateswymt) dopes: "Did you know.... Since 1989... Breathitt County Coach Mike Holcomb is 8-3 against Belfry?"
Class 2A
Owensboro Catholic at Murray. No. Instead, Aces fans, leave at 3, and plan on stopping in Marion for dinner. Either the Main Street Italian Grill or 88 Dip will do you right. You're welcome.
Christian Academy of Louisville at Glasgow. The running back for the visiting Centurions reminds the home team's coach of Mark Higgs, who almost certainly would've been one of my two or three favorite Miami Dolphins of all time if we had had cable from 1990 through '93 and didn't have to depend on rabbit ears and snowy CBS and NBC feeds from Nashville when I lived in Bowling Green.
Covington Holy Cross at Newport Central Catholic. Holy Cross must hate NewCath.
Lexington Christian at Somerset. More Mike Fields good quoting: "Look, boys, we've gotta keep working, keep getting better, keep encouraging one another."
Class A
Louisville Holy Cross at Mayfield. Great, thorough preview from Joey Fosko in The Paducah Sun: "This is a final eight game. It’s not supposed to be easy.”
Fort Mitchell Beechwood at Frankfort. Another great preview from Dan Clasgens of TriStateFootball.com, via WXIX of Newport. Beechwood engineered a quarterback switch amid its current eight-game win streak, and the home team rallied from 21-6 down in the fourth quarter to survive Bellevue last Friday.
Hazard at Williamsburg. "I have the ultimate faith in Coach Herron, Hatcher, and Thomas. I will be there to support my Jackets."
Pikeville at Westwood Fairview. I'm officially rooting for the visitors here. Per the Tweets of Coach Chris McNamee (@PHS_CoachMac), the Panthers had a pep rally at Pikeville Elementary School this week; plus, high-school students who sign up for the fan bus get a free ride, free meal and free ticket to the game. Now that's a deal!
The Franklin-Simpson Wildcats need no route or dining suggestions today; they are very familiar with the trip to Lone Oak.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I have lost faith in football in Fayette County.
ReplyDeleteLexington really is a forgotten town when it comes to high-school football in Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteOldies1480.com will have the Fort Campbell-Tilghman game tonight.
ReplyDeleteNice feature from John Middleton in the Harlan Daily Enterprise on one of Harlan County's all-time football greats.
ReplyDeleteIt was 7-3, Fort Campbell, late in the third quarter of the regular-season game between the Falcons and Tilghman.
ReplyDeleteJames Cook, editor of The Clay City Times, on Powell County: "... (H)ow about it Stanton, Clay City, Slade and all of Powell County? Let's show this team and our opponents just who we are and that we are behind our team all the way. Lets take as many fans to the game as will show up from Garrard County."
ReplyDeleteYou're taught not to do once-upon-a-time/this-happened-first/that-happened-next storytelling with game stories, but I think it might have a place in weeklies that publish several days after the events.
ReplyDeleteNow playing on WMYC: "Jingle Bell Boogie," by the Graves County High School jazz band.
ReplyDeleteTilghman's very good quarterback, Tyler Presnell, is a transfer from Lone Oak.
ReplyDeleteWilliamsburg hasn't been to a regional final since 2004, and the Yellow Jackets have made it this far only three other times in the football team's history (1964, 1981 and 2004). But we might be seeing a lot of Williamsburg over the next few years, as the Yellow Jackets' stars this year are a sophomore quarterback and freshman wide receiver.
ReplyDeleteBuy-and-sell line on WYMC ...
ReplyDeleteWell, so far, we've had a "14-inch jon boat" and "73-foot Fender guitar" announced for sale. My guess is that's supposed to be a 14-foot jon boat and 73-inch guitar.
ReplyDeleteOh, man ... this is painful ... the poor woman who is subbing for the regular host of this show has just gotten three hangups in a row.
ReplyDeleteOK, two successful calls in a row. Phew.
ReplyDeleteOK, she's getting it together now. Making the callers slow down and be more clear. You can hear the confidence in her voice growing. Go, sub WYMC woman! Go!
ReplyDeleteYard sale today tomorrow in Hickory, "right behind the chicken plant."
ReplyDeleteCommercial break! Phew. That was like the first round of a boxing match. It felt like we might have an early knockout, but the young challenger appears to have steadied herself before the bell.
ReplyDeleteDiabetic kit ... 1994 Mustang ... 1993 Jeep Cherokee ...
ReplyDeletePorcelain dolls with six-shelf showcase ... anniversary Zippo lighter ... Graves County courthouse prints ...
ReplyDeleteOK, that's all. She survived. Strong finish. Congratulations on a fine recovery, WYMC woman.
ReplyDeleteOooh ... "The Things We Do for Love," 10cc ... I literally sang this to myself the whole time I rode the "Space Mountain" indoor roller coaster at Disneyworld with my wife a few years ago.
ReplyDelete"Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine" by Tom T. Hall, who (it was recently discovered by me) is from Olive Hill.
ReplyDeleteStanton's on fire. This is going to be an exciting trip for the Pirates and their fans.
ReplyDeleteOh, cool ... it appears that WKSV is also planning to cover Stanton's Christmas parade (8 p.m. Dec. 2)!
ReplyDeleteBack to WYMC: "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose?" by Tony Orlando and Dawn.
ReplyDeleteThis just in: "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles is a great song! Stand by for more developments from listening to WYMC this afternoon in advance of the Mayfield-Louisville Holy Cross game.
ReplyDeleteStanford's WPBK just played Van Morrison's fantastic "Full Force Gale" and is now following it with "prayer time," in which the disc jockey is praying on behalf of a whole slew of listeners (presumably) by name.
ReplyDeletePineville's WRIL has tonight's Bell County-Louisville Central game.
ReplyDeleteWith the sun falling on this Friday afternoon, #khsfb chatter is picking up over at the Twitter desk. ... Jason Frakes of The Courier-Journal (@kyhighs) has just weighed in with a 34-13, Trinity, prediction for the Rocks' game with St. X. ... Indianapolis Colts tight end Jacob Tamme (@JacobTamme) offered a shoutout to his old team, the Boyle County Rebels. ... Joe Danneman (@Fox19Joe) with WXIX reports that parking is already growing scarce in Fort Thomas. ... @nkysportsblog predicts northern Kentucky's winners tonight to be Beechwood, NewCath, Highlands, Conner and Boone County. ... Bowling Green coach Kevin Wallace is "hoping for a Thanksgiving practice."
ReplyDeleteOh, excellent ... now WPBK is playing some song backwards. It's a regular, call-in-quiz thing. This is tough.
ReplyDeleteFirst caller thinks it's Ray Charles--he's wrong.
ReplyDeleteI think it might be Nina Simone.
ReplyDeleteAnother caller's guess: Bob Segar. Nope.
ReplyDeleteOh, it's Otis Redding ... "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Well, that was fun. That's a good feature. WPBK does it every weekday.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great station. This might be Kentucky's best radio station.
ReplyDeleteWow. Leon Russell: "Stranger in a Strange Land."
ReplyDeleteI remember our Mr. Toy went to a Leon Russell concert at SIU-Carbondale on a school night back in 1985 or so.
ReplyDeleteCameron Mills is preaching at a Stanford church this Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI really wish it had been Nina Simone. We definitely need more Nina Simone on Kentucky radio.
ReplyDeleteI must say, however, that Oldies1480.com back over here in Cadiz is playing "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates, and this, too, is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteNina Simone was so, so fantastic. My wife and I once visited her hometown--Shelby, N.C., I think offhand--and did our best to retrace how she would've walked to piano practices and stuff.
ReplyDeleteWPBK: Johnny Lang, "Walking Away."
ReplyDeleteWHVO: The Beatles, "Let It Be."
Koko Taylor ... well, this is really a delight. I have a hard time seeing how Powell County can withstand this WPBK onslaught. I think Garrard County is going to tonight's game handily.
ReplyDeleteThe game, by the way, is going to be at Garrard County Middle School (not the high school), at 304 West Maple (downtown) in Lancaster. Murray also plays its home games at the downtown middle school, which used to be the high school.
Back to Mayfield and WYMC ... just missed all but the tail end of some news item about the Junior Beta Club at Wingo Elementary School ...
ReplyDeleteI'm a big supporter of playing the games at the old middle school that used to be the high school. Years ago Mrs. GoHeath and I went to a Saturday afternoon playoff game at King George High School, only to be disappointed that no one was there. But then someone explained to us that the game was being played at the old high school. When we got there, we found that there was a big valley behind the school that formed a natural amphitheater and was the perfect place to play high school football. It was like watching a game at the football equivalent of the Field of Dreams. The whole town was there, and King George blew out their opponent. It was just a great, great experience.
ReplyDeleteThat is excellent.
ReplyDeleteThe best high-school football stadium I've seen is Reitz Bowl in Evansville, Ind., which sits on a hill on the west side of town, with the stands facing back eastward toward downtown.
Taking Heath out of the running, my favorite in Kentucky is Russellville's Rhea Stadium, which is at the old high school/current middle school.
Oldies1480.com just said that Lone Oak has never lost a home playoff game--13- or 14-0 all time.
ReplyDeleteLouisville Central readies for its game with Bell County--thank you, @HSreplays.
ReplyDeleteThe Twitter desk is almost stymied by all of tonight's broadcast options.
ReplyDeleteCovington Holy Cross and Anderson County are surprising early leaders over Newport Central Catholic and Hebron Conner, respectively.
ReplyDeleteGarrard County leads Powell County, 8-0.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Powell County-friendly WKSV of Stanton and Garrard County-friendly WPBK of Stanford are both carrying tonight's Powell-at-Garrard (Middle) game, and the two radio teams are apparently in close enough proximity to actually hear each other and respond to the other's broadcast. So, for example, there was just a close fourth-down spot, and the WKSV guys talked about "getting out the credit card" to swipe between the ball and the end of the chains--and then the WPBK guys laughed on their broadcasts and talked about "bringing out the credit card."
Garrard County, incidentally, failed on that fourth-and-1 run in Powell County territory, and now Powell County just picked up seven yards on a fourth-and-1 of its own at midfield. But now Garrard has intercepted at its own 34. ... 2:50 to go in the first quarter, and it's 8-0, Garrard.
Halftime: Covington Holy Cross 13, NewCath 7.
ReplyDeleteNearing end of first quarters: Conner 13, Anderson County 6 ... CovCath 0, Highlands 0 ... Scott County 14, Middletown Eastern 0 ... Lexington Catholic 7, Boyle County 0 ... Harlan County 6, Pulaski Southwestern 0 ...
Also first quarters: Louisville Central 7, Bell County 0 ... Beechwood 0, Frankfort 0 ...
ReplyDeleteAnd, now: Garrard County 10, Powell County 0.
The Mayfield Cardinals are on the field at War Memorial Stadium wearing their typical "red helmets with nothing on them," reports WYMC.
ReplyDeleteTrinity-St. X and Bowling Green-Warren Central are also kicking off now.
ReplyDeleteSecond quarters: Louisville Central 14, Bell County 0 ... Hazard 14, Williamsburg 0 ... Belfry 6, Breathitt County 0 ... Highland 6, CovCath 0 ...
ReplyDeleteWYMC: "I'm telling you folks, if you're not here ... the Mayfield speed, they can't handle it. It's like they're running in mud."
ReplyDeleteAnd, yet, Louisville Holy Cross has put together three first downs (two on Mayfield penalties) on its ongoing, initial possession.
ReplyDeleteMayfield intercepts in the end zone. WYMC: "The Mayfield fans are on their feet here!"
ReplyDeleteMayfield 7, Louisville Holy Cross 0 ... 5:00 to go in first quarter ...
ReplyDeleteThe Twitter desk is your best source for ongoing score updates, while the Kentucky desk here will try to concentrate on relaying lead changes:
ReplyDeleteWestwood Fairview 18, Pikeville 6
Bowling Green 7, Warren Central 0
Louisville Butler 3, Henderson County 0
Glasgow 7, Christian Academy of Louisville 0
Pulaski Southwestern 7, Harlan County 6

On Louisville Holy Cross's first down, Mayfield brings pressure up the middle: safety. Cardinals up, 9-0. WYMC: "They really don't have a clue what's going on with this speed. They're kind of shell-shocked."
ReplyDeleteOne WYMC dude: "We really haven't gotten a break tonight."
ReplyDeleteSecond WYMC dude: "I know. I don't know where this officiating crew is from, but I'm going to let them know."
Following delay of game on Cardinals, Mayfield throws touchdown pass: 16-0.
